...go bigger!

I've mentioned my friend Dave's all-steel ('cept hood) '87 Mustang notchback here a few times, including such details as the all-aluminum 420-inch Cleveland it ran and the lower-mid 8-second quarter-mile times it ran rather consistently on a true 10½"-wide tire and ladder bars.

Unfortunately, Dave crashed this past season on what he was sure would be a near 8.10 run. I heard lots of rumor and such about what happened to Dave, the car, the track, Elvis, and John F Kennedy... and the story gets more interesting every time.

Anyhow, he was able to salvage much of the car and the engine, which he sold off to pursue a new ride... now he's got himself an '05 Mustang, which he bought from Ford as a body-in-white (meaning a shell, doors, hood, fenders, and decklid only).

He's not sure what combination he's going to run yet, but it'll be an "Outlaw 10.5" car, meaning it will run on a 10.5W tire, which is actually closer to 11½" wide. Talking to him yesterday, he said it would be running at least 640 inches of aluminum big-block Ford, and a minimum of 650HP worth of nitrous oxide. He expects to make around 1200HP on the motor alone, but the final goal depends on the combo he chooses. He's considering going as high as 760 inches on a tall-deck block.

Keep in mind, he was running 8.30s with 420 inches (837HP if memory serves) and 500HP of nitrous on an inch less tire.

Though we're a bunch of Moparheads, this should be an interesting build. If anyone's interested in following it (and I know there are some racers hangin' around here), they'll be doing a buildup story in installments at Hardcore 5.0... the first installment can be seen here, which details mostly what happened to the old car and his acquisition of the body-in-white.

The car is expected to hit the strip for the first time in the middle of next summer... looking forward to watching it run. [smilie=e:

Cool!!

My friend expects to start buying engine parts, in an attempt to break the 7-second barrier, soon. Alot less motor, but a lot 'more' tire and chassis, than your friend's Moostang, tho.

Im hopin' to start working on my Moostang, soon, as well. I still wish Mopar had made something remotely sporty, RWD, and lightweight, in the 80s/90s...

Oh well, too late now...

Its nice planning/working on something that isn't a rustbucket, and which has no intrinsic value (ie. you can hack the crap outta it)

Ive browsed Hardcore 5.0 before, but haven't looked at it in awhile.

/me checks out link

Sweet. Momma always said come big or stay home. No not you Jester. [smilie=e:

That car was sweet! To bad it's gone. Can't wait to see the new one.

Really ticked me off tonight, watching Boyd Coddington taking that barn-fresh all original '66 Mustang GT and he burned the rear tires off down to the rare factory mags and then he kept the motor floored until it grenaded.
Those early Mustangs are'nt my thing, but I appreciate the fact that someone was/is looking for those mags and an original "A" code 289 4Bbl. He just blew that sh*t up for his own self-importance. I really can't use the words here to describe how I feel about people like that...

AGREED.....at one point in my life i held a high respect for the man who built cars like cadzilla and a few others that no longer come to mind.....the man is nothing more than a glorified kit car builder
