ok painting gods..wtf do i need to adjust to lose the texture effect..i just cant seem to shake it..mind you this is my first time handling these guns and im quite happy already..but i got primer laying down worse than spackle [smilie=b:

how wide of a fan is "normal"

Try this -

Mix your product as directed and make sure you've got the right size fluid tip in your gun. Urethane primer will need a bigger tip than most paints, so make sure you've got one capable of letting the primer out of the gun. Use the right hardener and thinner for the atmospheric conditions.

Set your air pressure - HVLP guns typically require something along the lines of 30 to 40 PSI at the gun inlet, in order to achieve the desired 10 PSI at the air cap. *HVLP is a system, not just a spray gun. You'll need air lines and regulators capable of supplying a High Volume of air. 1/4" fittings and lines are too small for a HVLP to work properly.*

Use the "six at six" rule to get good atomization. Hold the spray gun six inches from whatever your spraying and pull the trigger so that fluid comes out. Adjust the fluid tip and fan setting until you get a pattern of six inches, with the smallest over spray droplets at the outer edge of the paint line. Remember, the bigger the paint tip, the larger the paint droplets, and this is what gives orange peel (well, one of the causes, anyway).

Urethane primers tend to flash quickly, so getting away from big orange peel in warm weather is sometimes a lost cause. The more product you apply, the more orange peel you'll get. Loading it on won't make it flow out any better.

Practice lots. It's primer and you can sand out any mistakes. :)

well i got the "eastwood special" of 2 guns with 2 tips blah blah blah...asumeing i should be useing the 1.8 on primer only ..or should i be useing the smaller 1.3? if im getting HUGE droplets

is it posible that my regulater at the comp itslef is reading inacurate...unknown how old it realy is and its taken alot of use..my old siphon feed wanted 60psi..but it was on its final shots...was used and abused long befor i got it...think late 70s early 80s tiwanies crap

pretty shure im running all 5/8s line on everything never thought about what the fittings are tho

working with acrylic enamels

the old gun on a good day could lay down primer like it had already been sanded with 320 grit or better...as it died it still could but wouldnt fan more than 2 inches and was over spraying like 2 guns were just shooting paint in the air

thanx in advance for the help...need tomget the gun "in tune" befor sunday

funny you should say that..if i bumped up the air presure a bit it leveled out a little bit...ima go pick up a new regulater today and see if the old one has lost its acuracy

What kind of cfm's is your compressor capable of?

the big gun requires 13 I think... Heard there are ways around it.

the compressor is small but its no "stock" unit ..its got a 110/230 motor on it and compressor unit from something LARGE..as ive yet to find even a 60gallon localy that has anything on it even close to it...this compressor was setup and used for painting and being portible as it has an over ride to keep the motor spinning at all times and clitching the comp head on and off to mainttain 120 psi in the tank at all times..hell it kept up with siphon feeds and body air tools i dont see why an hvlp would pose a problem

it has painted atleast 3 cars by me and the guy i got it from was putting mirror finishes on cars with it..atleast 10 that i had seen(he was down on his luck and sold it to me...1 month later he was willing to pay double to get it back)

seems the regulator at the comp is toast and reading +/- 10-15 psi at all times..so i got me a at gun setup to toy with..but i wasnt takeing into account hose preasure loss...will see how it goes

I think earlier youmeant 3/8"hose ??,5/8"you could blow the paint off of semi-trailer's,,,I think you just need to practice with the gun,and get the gun set to a nice pattern, the pattern is important, but so,is the line/cap pressure. orange peel is usually a pressure adjustment...hang in there, you'll get used to it,you are switching from suction to hvlp,it takes some practice.
