wondering how much paint it should take to cover a FULL frame for a 57/58 ford......going metalic purple to match the new pinstripe work

dcc single stage with an hvlp

also does anyone have a paint code for a cheep yet durable castiron looking paint...im sick of buying rattle can

cant say how much, dont know how much there is to cover on a 57-58 ford frame. depends on how many cross braces and everything. a 60s imperial frame will take more than the frame from a triumph. haha.

How many mils/coats do you figure? Noncatalyzed will shrink more and alkyd does better on a frame due to it being oil base. Theres an additive to change a gloss to a flat but they are proud of it at napa. Last frame I shot was on a 54 GMC and we used krylon primer and gloss black. That was 5 yrs ago and it has been sitting in the woods behind his house ever since. Still shines like tobies ass and no lift or checking anywhere. I own a few HVLPs and siphon feeds galore and I agree that rattle cans suk but for a frame thats what I would use man.

you could always go spend 13 bucks on a gallon of semi gloss black implement paint and some mineral spirits and spray that.

well the frame only has 4 cross members (front, engine, shock, rear) and is a FULL boxed frame ..normaly i would say yeah black would work ...however the car is going to stay black and ive already got a slightly lighter than plum crazy picked out..lets see how about a pic to help ya all figure out its size its about 15 foot long or so

yes its suspended from the rafters (3inch tube steel rafters)

being a big black body with only some chrome to break it up and grey with a hint of purple in the seat felt i wanted to bring out some color onto the body with pinstripe and then tie the pinstripes into the car somehow and the frame is what shall do it

sand blasting it or? A little color on the frame sounds good. Then perhaps black striping on the frame too?

damn you for adding more work..your right black pin work on the frame is a must

im fixing to FULL weld all of the seams as well as the body mounts and fill some un-needed holes and add a lil filler to smooth things up

one nice thing about haveing 2 cars to build into 1 is that the running driveing one dont have to come apart till the frame and suspension are built

When you're done with the welding, blast it clean, prime it with a good epoxy primer and spray it wet-on-wet with your colour of choice.

If you want, you can do the filler work before epoxy priming, just make sure to clean all the fingerprints and such off of it before the primer.
You can also do the filler work AFTER epoxy priming, just scuff the required repair areas before smearing the bondo on. Of course, you should re-prime over the filler, so sanding will be required before re-priming.
If you're using a HVLP gun, two quarts of primer and two quarts of paint should be plenty. Better to have too much than not enough - nothing worse than running out of paint part way thru a job.
