Hey exhaust gurus

Stretch

Hey! There’s no easy button for a body like this!
I have collected just about everyting I need for the exhaust system on my truck ('98 ram1500 4x4 360). I have the shorty headers and the percys hi preformance header gaskets, the "hi flow non-cat" :shifty: is on its way (3' in and out), and my Y- pipe is made so I can install the cat. I have two 02 bungs and I have my 2 1/4" mandrel bent (not crush bent) tail pipes. All I need is the 3" pipe from the "Cat" to the muffler and a muffler. I'm going with a 3" single in and two 2 1/4" outs for the dual tail pipes.

My question is, Do any of you have experience with Flow Pro mufflers? I'm thinking about using part number FP745. I'm told it is a free flowing muffler that isn't much louder than stock. I want quiet first and free flowing second. I want free flowing because I'm trying to improve my gas malage as much as possable. I want quiet because I use this truck for hunting and pulling my trailer mostly. I don't want to hear the exhaust echo off what ever I'm pulling. I do a ton of hunting and I want to be as quiet as possable.

Here is a link to the pro flow web sight. The first link is to there home page and the second is to the page with the muffler I'm thinking about using. There is also some videos of trucks with this muffler on them. There is a '02 ram with a 360 and this muffler in one of the videos.

Check with the guys on ramforumz.com They will be able to tell you the best for your app. The other thing I found out about the Ram trucks is that Ma did what is called a death flash back a number of years back, which basicly detuned the engines to avoid pinging. If your truck ever had this you will never truely get good gas milage. I get about 17 highway now compared to 12 (5.2) before but that was after I installed a magnaflow high flow cat and cat back to duals system and then a superchips controller. I know a guy who has owned a 98 from new and never let a Chrysler mechanic touch his and he gets 23 on the highway. His has never been flashed and he just uses midgrade to alieviate the predetonation. If yours has been flashed then I would advise you go looking for a non-flashed pcm to replace yours if it has been, to achieve the best mileage possible.

I'm getting 15 MPG in town and around 18.5MPG on the highway now. The only "Flash" I have had done was to recalibrate the speedo for the 265-75-16 tires I have on it.

That ended in a new ECM because they let the smoke out of mine during the flash. I'm thinking they didn't hook up the battery charger when they were doing the flash.

Now I'm thinking about the AP Xlerator muffler. Part # XS2278. Are any of you familiar with this muffler?

I ran the Xcelerator, mine never really got that loud as I recall, but prior to that I had a Cherrybomb Vortex and a Ravin so, I may be a little skewed.

Yes. We have been installing those for many years, nearly as good as Magnaflow for less coin.

I had Flo-Pro's on the RR, the interior resonance made my ears pop, they be loud. I tossed 'em in the trash.

That's fine. I used to sell 'em, and they're nothing like what Stretch wants. XCelerators are a straight-through design, and though he won't necessarily get the resonance in his interior since the muffler's so far back, they're loud at the outlet. They're not exactly conducive to low-range off-roading when you're trying to not scare deer away. We talked earlier and agreed that anything aftermarket is just plain too f__kin' loud. In fact, with a stock Chevy truck muffler, we talked about the possibility of resonators in the tailpipes to quiet it even further. When he said he wants it quiet he wasn't kidding. He wants stock quiet, if not more quiet.

If truly quiet is the goal I would give up on the dual tails and use a muffler and tail from a Hemi Ram. The tailpipe has a resonator that helps control sound. I have a few new take offs laying around from folks that wanted loud Hemi's. Check around at local exhaust shops and one might score a nice take off for cheap.

He's adding headers and the highest-flow "cat" on the market, so the muffling is of extreme importance. There's nothing else to quiet it.

The good Dr. and I were talking about this last night and I have decided to go with a stock replacment chevy truck muffler. 3" single in and 2 1/4 dual out. The cat is 3" in and out. I'm running 3" pipe from there to the muffler inlet. It's a stright shot. The headers I bought fit the factory Y-pipe and that is 2" pipe. The factory cat is the Y-pipe on these trucks. The left head pipe comes into the bottom half of the converter and the right head pipe comes in to the top half of the converter. The up stream O2 sensor is in the cat between the two head pipes. I made a Y-pipe to connect the two head pipes into my 3" cat. I'll be welding an O2 bung into the 3" pipe just before the cat for the up stream O2 and I'll be welding a O2 bung into the 3" pipe after the cat for the down stream O2. I'm going to run the tails out the back under the bumper with the old tips from my charger. If it's to loud I'll be installing resonators. If it's still to loud I'll install turn down tips.

I'll take pics and post them as I go if you guys want. I know how you love garage time pics. If I can figure out how to post a home grown video I'll post that so you can hear it. If it can even be heard! :D
