What got you playing and who are some of your influences?

A friend of mine got me playing when I was about 15. First songs I learned were Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, SMoke on the Water and Iron Man...you know, the usual beginner stuff. :D I remember whan I first started learning I would play my dads guitar while he was at work. Well he came home one day and caught me playing his guitar and he FLIPPED!! Later he asked me if I even knew what I was doing so I showed him what I knew at the time. He took great pride in teaching me the 3 basic chords G,D and C and I just flew from there.

Main influences are:

James Hetfield - Metallica
Dimebag Darrell - Pantera/DamagePlan
K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest
Tony Iommi - Black Sabbath

to name a few.
So what's your story? :)

Started playing guitar in 1967 at age 11. Influences: george harrison, EricClapton.

i started playing giter when i was 8 .. that was 45 years ago... i am the man that can pull strings - hahahahaha--- influences-- Wilf Carter, Hank Williams, John Cash. Bluegrass, Willy Waylon and Dollie,, Loretta, Tammy Wynnet and my dad who taught me the 3 basic chords. --c g f----d a g....then i picked up the rest from other players... i can,t read a lick (note).. everything is done by ear....Janis Joplin, Mercy Brothers, and Bulldogs and Englishmen..and old Farron Young. and many many more...... if we ever get together i will sit in with anyone who would make me sound good....lol... i am just a picker and nothing fancy... i play now just to have fun...it,s a good way to relax and settle down after a hard day. to play an instrement is a gift that you can give pleasure and happyness to others with..it,s a great gift to have... enjoy the music and never give up..---ORVIL

Hence why I am giving 2 of my coworkers kids lessons for free! I can't charge for lessons man, it just don't feel right to me for some reason. I enjoy and take great pride in teaching anyone who wants to learn guitar!! :) It's an instrument capable of so many emotions and it's just fun to teach others to play and see them grow with it! I figure I have taught about 8 people to how to play and 5 of which have way surpassed anything I ever taught them! I get a huge kick out of that!! Yeah I'm very passionate about music and if I can spread the passion man, that's the greatest feeling in the world to me! :) I have played in front of crowds before (played a couple friends parties with other musicians) and while that is an amazing feeling it doesn't seem to top teaching others and watching them fly with it.

my uncle played flamenco style guitar...so that got me at a young age but i didn't start until 00...but i credit everything from ac/dc to zappa...even though i mostly play metal... :)

The Young Rascals "Love is a beautiful thing", got me going at about 12 years old. Then I discovered Zep and Hendrix.

I started when I was about 11 or 12 years old. An childhood friend of my oldest brother showed up at the door one day and said, "Hey this is MIke's and I'm returning it." That had to be almost a 10 year loan of a guitar.
I didn't even invite the guy in because I was home alone..
It was a late 60's Les Paul Custom - copy with two humbuckers.
It was beat up.
The neck was WAY out of alignment.
I convinced my parents to let me take it to a shop for repair and it only cost $26 and that included a new set of strings. I ended up taking lessons in that shop.
my oldest brother has that guitar again. I passed it on to my nephew and when he moved away Mike got it back. He's going to rebuild it this year. (as well as build a new guitar from scratch.)

Influences? Stevie Ray Vaughan - and everything and everyone that influenced him.. I love the blues - real blues.
A string ad featuring Al Dimeola inspired me to "invent" a new chord. The ad showed him with his fingers stretched out over I think 7 frets.. I couldn't do it so I started moving my fingers in closer together until I had something that sounded right.
I could never find anyone that could tell what the chord actually was. Earlier this year I punched it into a computer program that I have and it told me it's a minor chord. Neat thing is that it's an easy barr chord and I can move it up and down the neck for any note.

Oh, and I can't play worth a crap.... I make good noise. Sometime I stumble onto a riff. Play a whole song all the way through? .... jingle bells - almost.

SRV is the man who made me go DAMN! I want to play guitar. I too love the bluesas well as metal. I have only been playing for about two years but I love it.

I just opened up the birthday present that I ended up ordering for myself..

Guitar Hero II for PlayStation2 along with 2 Wireless guitar controllers.

First practice session: Surrender by Cheap Trick - 88%

I had to stop because my shoulder is messed up again.

Fieldy sucks!! He doesn't even PLAY! His strings are soo loose they just flap on the fretboard and he dances around like a monkey on crack trying to look like he's playing. Name one good bass line from a Korn song....don't get me wrong I do like Korn but Fieldy is WEAK!! Sorry man at least Hetfield has talent and actually plays notes. :naughty:

I can't really remember what got me playing (that was 12 years ago) but the guys I look up to are Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Slash, Kirk Hammett and many of the old blues players (Son House, Robert Johnson, etc.).
