Got my Jeep home!

She's here! I found some very good news too! Not Quadra Trac . 360, 2 barrel, 727  AMC 20 rear (it's not the same POS under CJ's with the bolt on hubs), Dana 44 front, minor rust issues underneath, but sheet metal was overlayed inside, and Rhino lined. I'll get something to neutralize the rust, and undercoat the whole thing. Future plans include a 3" body lift, before buying new tires, presently she's on 33X12.50R15's and install a 3" single exhaust.

This week I'm going to going over everything on the brake and suspension systems, change the oil, tune it up rebuild the carb and I'm going to yank the whole A/C system and trashing the emissions crap. I'm also going to play around with the front end by swapping in some round headlights, REAL Jeeps have round headlights, and locating some nice round driving lights, and trashing the plastic grille. :giggedy:

Pics in a bit.

There used to be a few of the '60s style front ends in my favorite yard, but one guy went there and got all of them. Made a killing on eBay with 'em. If you want the '70s styling with the full-width grille, that shouldn't be too tough to find.

FYI, the "Real Jeeps have round headlamps" thing was a reference to the much-hated YJ, not the trucks or wagons. I hung out a few times at college with a die-hard Jeep guy that daily-drove his CJ5, and he said "F__k the headlights, real Jeeps don't have dash pads!" :D

I'm thinking heavy gauge stretched steel, with vertical bars in the brush guard similar to an M715.

Pics! All I've done is tossed the plastic grille on the ground, so far...

Shouldn't be too tough at all Doc, and I'm NOT spending a ton of cash on a Gladiator grille only to have it get smashed.

did the 715's even have a grill in them?...regardless...the side panels for the headlights as i recall was just a bucket change i dont think the header actualy changed...tho i belive there was a overlay fill panel on it for the gladiator grill...theres a few ways around that.....ive got a CHERRY glad grill i wont part with lol i got it back in uhh 85?86? well before 89 thats for sure and its been on a wall or another ever since.....i do know where one or 2 of them might be if they really are that hard to come by...as well as the headlight panels

i agree with copying the millspec bumper to a point but it needs to be beefier looking

looking at it again i dont think its even a fill panel just some holes filled..the headlight buckets i "think" can be snagged from a dodge truck...the smaller lights are probably jeep only

The Gladiator is sweet, and if I was building a "Pavement Princess" I'd be looking for one. However, since I'm building a truck to take out in the woods the stretched steel is all I need. The brush guard that is on there is pretty stout, I'm going to add some 1/4" round stock in the center openings. I have a couple 7" headlight buckets from an A body, they look like they will fit no problem. I have been looking on ebay for LED driving lights to fit into the smaller openings.

It has probably 4-5 gallons of old gas in it, it runs on that, but not well. Should I trailer it over to the gas station and fill it up and add some Seafoam or something like that and just replacing the fuel filters for the next couple tank fulls? Or should I drop the tank?

The smaller lights are military-only. Those holes were covered by round trim pieces on civilian models. I think 69.5 is right about the filler panel; you just have a whole bunch of added tabs, holes, and brackets for the plastic grille and probably the rectangular headlamp buckets.

There used to be a J10 in a nearby yard with a Dana 60 under the back. Non-floater, standard half-ton wheel pattern. It was offered for a few years as an option. I wonder if it's still there. It's kind of a rare thing to find, and it's definitely an oddball setup (two different-length axle shafts from what I could see). Ford did the same thing for I believe two years. The Ford half-tons had 3.33:1 gearing. They're rare as hell.

I think we should take Bill to Pauls yard when he comes up this summer. There is alot of J-10 stuff there!

On the fuel, I would just top it off with fresh gas and yes, add some SeaFoam. Marine Sta-Bil would also be a good idea, to rid the fuel of ethanol.

I would suggest putting a Wix 33011 filter on it (why the hell do I remember these numbers?!) in a visible spot near the carb and seeing how bad it gets with use before dropping the tank. It's a clear, shatter-proof plastic housing so you can see the contamination as it collects. If by some odd chance you have a 3/8" line, then get a 33012. DO NOT use one of those glass, replaceable-element fuel filters--EVER!

That J-10 with the Dana is in George Burns' yard... at least it was. I thought I showed that to you. It was in the wooded area of the yard.

My friend Mark raped all the Gladiator parts out of there, which sucks. 71 could've gotten that stuff cheap.

I do remember that now. I also remember there being a bunch of jeep trucks at Pauls place too.

I don't think so Doc, I've been looking at a lot of pictures. I also know of a guy that has a few M715's and I'm going to see if I can get over to take a look. The difference I saw in pics was my truck has tabs welded to the bottom to attach the grille.

The military versions have the blackout lights mounted in those smaller holes. I thought about finding some housings and swapping the guts with LEDs, besides I'm not planning on converting to 24v.

Why not? I've used those on occasion with no problems. In fact, I went 11.50's on a "temporary" setup with one of those feeding the dominator on my old 440 in the duster.

I've seen them shatter and burn a car down. I knew about those Doc, my uncle's '40 Pontiac had one when he bought it and one of the inspectors noticed it and told him it was REQUIRED to be replaced.

Yes, we must go yarding when I get up there! Glad I'll have a trailer with me!

How do you make a car sound like a dog? Use a glass-housing fuel filter, or one of those Edelbrock "bugeye" triangular air cleaners. You'll hear the "WOOF!" as the car goes up in flames. :D
