Got a ride in a REALLY strong civic last night

A guy I know has a civic with a big turbo and whatever done to the engine needed to make it stay together. It's in the 450 whp range or so. Of course it doesn't hook worth a damn, but it rolls right the hell on out when he gets it going. He was at the street races last night. He didn't run anybody, mostly because the overwhelming majority of stuff out there is laughably slow, and they're afraid of getting beat. I had Chico (owner of the honda) take me for a ride, and hot damn that thing moves! I knew it would, but you still have to experience being pressed back into the seat hard by a little car like that. The cans in the 4wd monte carlo were talking all kinds of shit after beating Jim in the hemi truck (he let them win to sucker them into betting more money, but they were afraid to run him again). Chico tried to get them to back up their shit talking by running a little honda. Amazing how all that bravado suddenly disappeared when THAT subject came up. Chico is not a ricer-ricer is a mentality, a mentality that guys like him don't have.

There's another local guy that has a SERIOUS turbocharged civic. I mean, this guy has an aftermarket BLOCK, HUGE turbo, etc etc. Turned up, his makes around 700 hp at the wheels. His car is the kind that catches you 100 feet before the end of the 1/4 mile and passes you like you're in reverse. When you get the timeslip you find he posted a trap speed 32 mph faster than you. I'm hoping he'll get that car out there and skin some shit talkers up.

Then there's wontgetdusted with his 11 second plain-looking all wheel drive eclipse. That's 11.90's on ordinary street radials with the internally-stock 2.0 liter. Now it has a not-so-stock 2.4 in it. Wonder what it'll do now?

ill give credit that 4bangers can and will make HP if the right work and money are thrown at them..but the average "rice" is nothing more than mild exhaust work a fart can a BOV and alot of extra weight

It's the wave of the future...forced induction...friend of mine has a 331 ford with a single turbo...1347 hp 1100 ft lbs...drives it every day

There's nothing like a well-installed turbo to make a car a realiable daily driver that can really move when needed. I have to think that a 4-banger putting out 700 hp can't last long, however, and I wonder how much money it takes to keep it together.

At the organized street drags that began here this past summer I found myself impressed with what's possible with those little cars.
When the hood buckles and shakes as they leave the line you know the finish line is coming up right quick.

a turbo can make reliable HP and most turbo designed engine can handle it VERY well...you have to remember with a turbo you DROP the compression in turn causeing less wear and tear on the engine internals ....if memory serves the STOCK 2.5 turbos in good ole mopars can handle 500+WHP with stock rods, crank, block..befor things start flying apart needing reinforcement

there are mitsubishi 2.0l 4g63 turbo cars making over a 600hp and get driven daily.and thats with no girdles or block filling that get driven every day. my turbo awd auto went 11.90s at 109.00 on the 120k stock long block @ 23lbs of boost and i my total cost including the coast of the car at that point was about $4500 since i've built a 2.4l(mitsu not chrysler) for it with eagle rods and wiseco pistons but of course the new motor likes a lot more fuel than the 660 cc injectors can put out but soon we'll see if the 1600cc can do the job.40lbs of boost here i come!

Civic Shmivic! :dgt:

It may be fast but not this fast! :shifty:

The 4 bangers are the hot rod fodder for what is available to the kids of today. For us it was the musclecars as they were the common everyday car, cheap to buy and a dime a dozen. For the kids today the cheap rides are the 4 bangers. My oldest used to get Japanese spec'd engines for a guy in Montreal sent to him for transplants in the local Civics/Preludes and such. One of these in a Civic would work every bit as hard as a 340 4 speed Dart/Duster/Demon. And I have been in enough of the 340s in the day to remember.
The next was the same setup with a 75 hp nitrous shot. These were very impressive. I don't give a shit about longevity of engine or anything lke that, these little phockers would scream. On the cheap for today's value of money - the exact same thing we did with the 383s and 440s - mo' go for little do'.
So its just kids doing the same thing as cheaply as possible today. The material may be different, but the goal is the same. The great equalizer is technology and it has not stood still for the last 30-40 years. If we had stock heads that flowed like racing items and featherweight valve components and rotating assemblies like they do today,well........
And while 90% out there may be poseurs and decal and wing "me toos" the 10% that are actually working on these cars - well look out. Your pride may take a kick to the head if you snag the wrong one. There are way more mid 10 second/ tons of 11 second cars out there today than when we raced all those years ago. To have an 11 second car in 1970 was quite a feat. Yes that car can go 11 seconds today with today's gear and all the advancements made and be vastly more reliable, but the pimple faced punk in the ricebox next to you did it for 1/4 or what you paid.

Am I a fan - no. I stick to what I grew up with and lusted over for all these years. But I am sick of everyone pissing on all these kids just due their own ignorance. Let's see your chest stick out with pride when a 4 banger hands your mint 440+6 cuda its hat and shirt - then drives home with A/C, three times the mileage, no insurance headaches.....

Yeah, I'd say there's really two camps: tuners and ricers.

ricers are the poseurs and decal and wing "me toos"

tuners are the guys that deserve the credit for what they do which basically amounts to hot rodding.

There's one exception though - there are guys out there with $100K of work and parts under their hood. I'm not sure where they fit into the grand scheme of things.

"Yes that car can go 11 seconds today with today's gear and all the advancements made and be vastly more reliable, but the pimple faced punk in the ricebox next to you did it for 1/4 or what you paid. "
and stop too :D

100k rice rocket? he's an IREALLYWANTEDAHEMICUDBUTNONEFORSALETHISWEEK

Yes there are some of the $100-$150-$200K into it deal, but I can't remember being an equivialnt type when we were into it. Well that may be that we were those punks then and hung with who we knew. And there wasn't a lot of really well off guys around then. With the instant millionaires and money soaked drug dealers today, they may have created their own market. Any market will spring up where there is a percieved demand. But yes from the multi million dollar hemi cars to the several hundred thousand ricers - there is no shortage of cash flowing. And there is always the two camps of doing it on the cheap, or doing it with the bankroll.

i will continue to piss on the average ricer for several reasons

copy and paste tactics(ala kit car parts glued on in any way they can)
noise befor power
wings that actualy cause LIFT
stickers must be the wave of the future...and add 5HP each...ohh wait thats a "decal" it must add 10hp
semi truck rims on 8 inch disk brakes

imo the "tuner" guys who actualy care more about total performance over looks...there NOT rice but a true group of hodrodders..its the snot nosed kid who smears the line between rice and tuner.casue A he has more money than sense and B cause he thinks its "all about the bling".would be the same as him, takeing a super bird droping 24 inch rims on it adding a wing on top of the wing a truck visor some neon ground effects and as much "cosmetic" ?improvements? as he can befor ripping the hemi out cause he nuked it trying to show off and replaced it with a 4banger with twin hair dryers

Well its a big world and its entirely up to you, but please be aware that you are stereotyping and that is never a good thing. If you have ever been on the wrong end of stereotyping, you'll know its not the best.
And I think the wing and decal set have already been covered off in the above.
But the days of 8 cylinders always winning are long gone.

no i totaly agree..4bangers can kick some serious ass..and by no means am i steriotypeing..the problem is that the vast majority of imports are nothing more than fiberglass and bondo with a fart can(AKA rice) then theres your tuners with thin rubber solid springs and MASIVE amount of tuned parts from the suspension all the way thru the entire engine...and then youve got your hot rods..with gutted bodys for light weight and an engine thats all go ...the problem is that the ricers give the rest of the bunch a bad name..sure a tuner can be ricey but its still all buisness under the skin and its generaly tastefull and well organized/executed to an extent
remember ive got myself a 2.5 turbo caravan and love smokeing rice...you can pick a true tuner and rod out befor the light turns green ..and belive me the insult to a rice being smoked by a caravan is good one...i love what can be done with 4cyl's its simply amazing..the 75 celica engine i built was proff that theres HUGE gains to be made even on an N/A engine..hell it snaped its stock axles and destroyed 3 trannys and 2 diff's..and still never reached its total potential(needs a supra 5spd)

Yeap they move alright, and going to UTI with all the faggles I get to see/hear them everyday. But I did to get to ride in a guys (who has become a good friend of mine) SRT4 with a little tuning done to it and some shit here and there, and by no means is it "hella" fast but it's kinda weird riding in a peppy turboed car.. definitely a must do.
son of a bitch what was I trying to say there?

Well - mebbe I'm intolerant or old fashioned or whatever, but I'd be a lot more prone to accepting the whole world of tuner cars if the kids that owned them did not not come with such snotty attitudes so frequently.

I understand that it's not always the case, but it's been my experience more often than not.

I owned a little Celica GT 5 speed in the late '80's that was a quick, fun little car to own & drive. It looked good, had a sunroof, manual trans, rwd nice interior and decent handling. It was not V8 powerhouse but I enjoyed the hell out of it. If fixed up and refined a bit, it would have made a damn nice little cruiser.

Hell even some of the stock cars nowadays aren't to bad, one of my favorites is that 3.5 Nissan Altima with a 6spd. Working at wal-mart I get to drive all the latest shit and man.. that mofo actually broke em loose in second :toot:.. accidently of course [smilie=i:
I've been reading through a lot of the car and drivers and motor trend and all those lately and some of these little cars can scoot man. I even get to arguing with one kid at school the pure awesomeness of a v8 over anything else and man he always gets pissed, but whatever ya know. I'm at the point where I'll take one of anything, haha.
