I just signed up for a welding course at the local college.

Shit, I just counted the weeks... 23 weeks!
Only 3 hours a week though. What else can I do with my Monday nights...

I've welded a little bit here and there, but I'm the sort that likes to see how it's done right and learn the basics, then build from there.

Should be fun and learning something new isn't usually a bad thing.

If they still start you out with oxy-acetylene, it's fun to watch what you are trying to do with any other processes in "slow motion".

yep oxy-acetylene and electric arc welding to start.

There're two other courses that follow that go on to GMAW/FMAW (MIG) and then SMAW (stick welding). I would have preffered to jump right to the MIG class, but I need the basic course as a prerequisite. Besides, the basic course is where you learn not stick the wire in your ear.

Good on Ya.... :2thumbs:

I too have thought of doing a night school course for welding/sheetmetal work/electrical bla, bla, bla...Just need to get off my ass and do it I guess.:shifty:

with a wire feed its point and click

stick SUCKS!!!!! been there self taught that..hated every min of it...stick is IMO useless unless your welding ungodly thick materials

LOVE to lear to weld aluminum..some day ill break down and buy the wire and the bottle

yeah, all the welding that I have done was wire feed. Pretty straightforward once you figure out your settings.

I'll not be welding on any cars.... that I know of.

There's a barn that I'd like to seal up by welding the doors shut. Apparently, if you do that, in 20 years, it fills up with classic cars.

ROFL

XL you think undercoating catches fire when welding...try a plasma cutter.....the fun is staggering

Yup I thought the same thing when I read this. I learned stick in HS, and didn't touch another welder for 5 or 6 years, I had to use a MIG when I started at Midas and haven't looked back. I have met a few older guys that love stick welding and are total badasses at it. Guess some have it and some don't...
As far as heliarc welding, I'll leave that to the pros

Learning to use fire is the best way to learn, like bootsy said it's in slo-mo so you can see whats happening. I generally use everything but a tig at work and a spool gun for aluminum, it's even easier than mig. BTW, you can get aluminum sticks and weld that way too, makes a hella mess though.
