Finally got my shite together.....

My mommy said I couldn't so
Hey Fellas!!
Sorry I haven't payed the regular visits to the boards lately. I finally got a steady job after I got layed off from the airport. I got a job working customer service for Dish Network. Nice job for sitting on my ass while on the phone. Finally payed my debts and I can throw my money to my ride. Proud of myself right now. I finally bought the hardware for my ride. Here it is...

FROM EBAY::
1) Holley Street Dominator Intake Manifold $130
2) Holley 600cfm carb (Not Double Pumper) $150
3) Nice chrome valve covers $15

FROM SUMMIT::
1) Crane Cam $115
2) Headman Hedders 135$

FROM JUNKYARD
1) Crappy 360 heads $25 (believe it or not)

And I'm also rebuilding my engine and it's going to cost me................$1200 including rebuilding the heads and machining. I'm going .030 on the pistons which are the Speed Pro Hypereutectic Pistons. On the rods and main, .010 with some Clevites. And I'm going to whack .030 of the heads to keep stock compression ratio.

What do you guys think? Nice setup? Just going by what the Doc ordered for a daily driver. Thanx Doc. I went by your word. On the next paycheck, I'm going to buy the Mopar Standard Electronic Ignition. If I have more cash to throw around, I'll buy the MSD Ignition and buy it direct from the factory since it is about 5 miles away from where I live [smilie=e: Thats about it fellas, and thanx for reading. I hope I pay more visits to the boards if my job lets me. If you guys have Dish Network as your satellite telvevision provider and need help or have a question just give me a hollar. That is all. Take care fellas. Peace...

Great to hear Danny. Always nice to be debt free, isn't it? :) Sounds like you will be having lots of fun in the near future!

Sounds good but I would rethink the hypereutectic pistons. They have a nasty habit of shattering.

everything that i have read about them they seem to be the choice.....cast pistons are shiot. and well foreged are exspensive...but i always though that the hypereutectic were more exspensive then the forged

Hyper-e's don't like detonation, I've got some here in a motor that have CHUNKS knocked out of them. Then you're caught in a death spiral, because the edges of the chunked out spots are hotspots causing more detonation, which causes more piston damage and ...

And don't forget ... if they're installled with the right piston to wall clearance, they'll sound like a diesel until they heat up and expand.

Honestly I was kind of glad when that motor with the K-B's lost oil pressure.

Other people like them.

well that is not something i have heard of before.....but i would go for forged pistons before anything anyways....at least that is my choice

Thanx for your props fellas!!

AS FAR AS THE PISTONS, Nah that won't be hapening. I wanted something better than shitty assed stock cast pistons. So I went with hyperuetectic, since cast is horrible. And forged is rediculously expensive and I don't shite money. Detotnation? Of course not, I won't be running nitrous or any of that extreme crap. Just a daily driver. I will race my ride to any little cocky sport compact that steps up to me or at the local drags everyonce and a while, but thanx for the concerns fellas!!

Nitrous isn't the only thing that causes detonation. [smilie=e:

Why is cast horrible, other than the fact that it's stock? Especially since you said

Not trying to argue, just thinking that maybe the money spent on the hyper-e pistons would be better spent elsewhere. If cast pistons will work for your application, that is.

Oh, and by the way, I DO shite money, but I'm too good to fish it out of the commode and clean it off. I'd rather be poor than get poo-poo on my fingers. [smilie=eggface.gif]

Just a few things...
  • 1) Hypereutectic pistons are cast. Let's never, ever forget that. So, if you're not going forged, you're going cast whether you like it or not.

    2) Hypereutectic pistons will break far more easily than a standard cast piston. Why? "Hypereutectic" means they have a higher silica content than normal aluminum... in fact, it means they contain more silica than can actually be held in solution in room-temperature aluminum; they superheat the molten aluminum to disssolve extra silica in it. Consequently, the pistons to be cooled quickly so the silica stays in suspension. For those of you keeping score at home, silica is the main ingredient in glass and sand... and if somehow there's a lump of it that didn't dissolve stuck in one of your pistons, you will find out aboot it. You know what's even more expensive than forged pistons? Having to build your engine twice.

    3) Detonation can (and often does) happen during the cam break-in if you're not careful about distributor positioning. As many can attest (Rich?), there are few things more disheartening than your new engine doing a rapid self-disassembly in the first 20 minutes of its life.

    4) 360 heads do not have a noticeably-larger chamber than your 318 heads (unless you have a 1967-70 318)... so you're not going to lose much compression--if any--by going to the 360 heads. I bring this up mostly because the LA head design has precious few (10) head bolts per bank, so deck thickness is of paramount important for sealing... ask 68R/T about this phenomenon :D. If anything, I'd suggest a small cut (like .010") to clean it up and get a slight compression boost, and a pair of the Mopar Performance thin head gaskets, which will give you a small bump in compression without sacrificing any cylinder-head integrity.

    5) XL smells like vitamins and pee.

    6) Believe me, the irony of this next statement is certainly not lost on me: If you're going through the whole shebang, why didn't you just grab the whole 360? You'd have a much-greater piston selection, 42 more cubes to start--much of it in the stroke, and other than the driver's-side motor mount and torque converter, it's a drop-in where the 318 was. The driver's-side mount is easy to find (tons of 360 Cordobas out there) and you'd probably be able to take the stock converter with your core motor. There's no replacement for displacement, my friend.
It sounds like a well-thought-out plan, Daniel. Have fun with it--you'll be amazed how well that 318 can run with just the little you're doing to it. [smilie=e:

Stay outta trouble, young man!

Hmmm...........I'll go with the cast pistons then. I still have a week before I finish paying off the rebuild. The guy that rebuilt my engine is a Christian so he gave me a huge break on the money matters for the rebuild. Most likely he didn't begin the rebuild. He just tore the engine apart. I still have a chance to tell him I want some aftermarket cast pistons. Maybe I'll work my arse off with some overtime hours to afford the forged ones. So how are forged pistons? Are they as hardcore as they sound? Once again, thanx for the concerns fellas. It's a good feeling when your not left in the dark. Peace...

  • I went to go see the engine and the reputable salesman even told me NOT to buy the engine. Apperantly he said that the engine will need some resleeving or something like that. So I took the heads instead.

[smilie=e: Glad to hear thing are smoothing out for you Danny.. that's awsome! And you should be proud of yourself for getting out of the red. Been there myself and it's a PITA! lol

Sounds like you are on the right track with the motor.. keep up the good work!

Adam

Phew...I called my the guy thats rebuilding my engine and told me he hasn't ordered the pistons yet. Most likely I will go with cast because forged is rather expensive. The guy said he will drop in some Speed Pro Cast pistons with the regular rebuild. I asked him how much more it would be to drop in some forged. He told me $355 more. What do you guys think? My heart is on the forged pistons, but my wallet says go with the cast. I still need to but a Electronic Ignition to get rid of the lean burn crap. Anyone have one to spare? Thanx!! Peace...
