Exhaust help please.

Have a blown O-Ring/gasket just after the manifold. Pulled the 2 bolts and I know the lower plate is supposed to wiggle and slide down, releasing the washer sleeves, and I can separate from the manifold to get to the seal. I sprayed it with PB Blaster a few times and let it soak for a bit. It won't budge! Any ideas or suggestions?

BFH, from every angle possible. Try catching the edge of it from above with a crowbar - or whatever. And hit it - hit it - hit it......and then hit it some more. [smilie=f:

Yeah whack it with a hammer and 2x4 on the exhaust pipe. If that don't work 68's method surely will. I truly hate that style, I've considered having that donut milled off the manifold so I could have a flat gasket surface.

Well I finally got both sides of the exhaust off the manifolds. Reason I'm doing this is, there was an exhaust TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP noise from the driver side and it was driving me NUTS! Went up to Autozone by my house and looked up parts in their system and, it says an exhaust flange gasket is not required. Hmm. There are no gaskets or even donut seals on any of the exhaust, pipe or manifold so I'm just gonna clean em up best I can, throw it back together and see what happens. If it still don't fix the issue, I'll have to wait til 69 gets back home from his trip and pick his brain about it. Any suggestions of what I could do besides cleaning and putting back together? I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

is this a "ball and socket" setup bro?.......i coulda swore theres a flange gasket that goes around the ball and socket.....you may have to check another year range....if there is nothing get some kind of sealent to toss in there if you have to...but....while youve got it off you might have a look around the head and manifold and see if the manifold at the head isnt leaking....i dont think ive EVER had those pipes off the manifolds.......

Ball and socket setup, yes. Got it cleaned up best I could and put back together. Fired it up "open header" and took vid while it was all off. :p Anyways, I got it all cleaned up best I could and reassembled. Not tapping near as bad as it was but, I'll have to test drive it and see. Letting the pipes cool for a bit then I'll try to re-tighten the bolts if I can. Hopefully this fixes it because, this isn't a job I ever wanna do again! :D Oh and I don't know of a sealant that will hold w/o burning off. Most high temp sealants are good to about 750* but I think the manifolds hit around the 1500* mark, or somewhere around there.

Well I cleaned everything up best I could and threw it all back together. The offending noise seems to be vanquished! :giggedy: I can still detect a small amount of it but, that might mean I'll be throwing new manifold gaskets on it soon. Took it for a drive and at idle at a red light, I didn't hear it nearly as bad as I did. Under acceleration, I don't really notice it and I can now hear the engine for once! :D Hope it don't come back for a while, if ever!

When I had my 73 340 roadrunner It had manifolds with the donut on them. I had a heck of a time getting those things to seal. Eventually what I ended up doing was putting RTV high temp silicone on the manifold donut, and a bunch along the inside lip of the bell flange. Then I'd position the pipe into place, and then use some 2x4's and a small bottle jack to hold the exhaust pipe tight and in place while I installed the nuts and bolts and tightened it down. Then let it sit over night to let the silicon set up. My small exhaust leaks finally went away.

The high temp RTV stuff I can find is only good for 750*F though. It held up for you? :wtf: I'm not opposed to trying that. 69 suggested finding some similar kind of stuff with a high copper content and using that. I have no idea what it is though. I'm not hearing the noise like I was but, still might not be a bad idea to put something in/on it for cheap insurance.

Yup just used the orange/red high temp RTV. Once it's installed and sealed up it will harden and crystallize, and probably fall off to some degree. But once it's sealed up the leaks it acts just like carbon to seal it up until disturbed.

Permatex Ultra Copper sealed my headers to the heads on The Black Bitch for 3 years... never a leak. VersaChem makes a less-expensive version, if $6 is too much to spend. :D

i HATE that ceramic crap with a passion..i tryed it and never got a good seal out of it cause it hardens and falls out..maybe the stuffs better these days?..and the orange ultra high temp copper rtv permatex is 1500 deg's...the alfa guys swear by it INSTEAD of the stock head-to-manifold gaskets

hell bro the lloyd has the orange on its manifolds right now....

You guys don't sell Ultra Copper?! Really?! It sounds like a hell of a place to open a parts store... :D

Well I did find it at my store but, for some reason Tigard store doesn't have it. O.o The stuff we have is only rated for 700*f though.
