The eight-speed automatic used in large Dodge and Chrysler cars, Ram trucks, Jeep Grand Cherokees, Dodge Durangos, and the future Jeep Wrangler is getting an upgrade.
The company did not say when it would happen, but thereis a comment on “Conversion of 8-speedfrom Generation 1 to Generation 2” in the next four-year union contract.
The eight-speed is already a highly capable and efficient transmission, at the state of the art, but ZF and Chrysler have been building them for some time, and have likely gotten some feel for what goes wrong over time and what feature are productionbottlenecks; and have increased their knowledge throughproduction of the nine-speed automatics.
