I'm looking for some suggestions of movies that I could rent/buy that would be appropriate for my 13 year old daughter, my wife, and not too boring for me.

Specifically, I'm looking for something that will exercise a surround sound system.

I finally hooked up my rear speakers in the family room - after 5 years.. - and I'm trying to get my wife and daughter excited about the whole home theatre experience.

Obviously, they're not really interested in gore, blowed-up stuff, or space/sci-fi... girly flicks don't really translate to big screen and 5.1 surround any differently than watching them on a small screen with stereo - they're stories and sub-plots, not special effects.

So, any ideas?
Someone has already suggested the March of the Penguins. :dgt: or maybe it's a renter..

The Incredibles (winner of this years Oscar for best sound effects and a good movie to boot)
Master and Commander
Superman the movie
Apollo 13
Contact
The Lord of the Rings parts 1 / 2 and 3
I, Robot
Thunderbirds
Titanic
Fight Club 0db LFE
Pearl Harbor
Spiderman (few parts in the movie)
Star Wars all five films well so far with Star Wars episode 3 Revenge of the sith, being realised on October 31st 2005

Give me a bit i will find some more.

Definately The Lord of The Rings trilogy.....

Another movie that I can watch over and over is O Brother, Where Art Thou. Absoloutely hilarious and the music really comes across nice on the surround sound.

hehehehehe. I am just finishing up a home theater room in the basement, and the kids wanted to watch one of "their" movies, so we watched the incredibles together. fun as all hell and had all 8 channels a flyin! enjoy! Psssst, what kinda stuff yah got? where the hell is RobR? We can talk about this stuff forever.
Oh, BTW....do not get "Boogeyman" It scared the crap outta member RJR, and I am STILL trying to get the smell out of there. :D Damn good body massage from low harmonics though!

I saw that movie with 4 friends... I thought it was hilarious. We were crackin jokes the whole time and it kinda took the edge off the movie.

Certainly didn't concern me....I like em. But it was reallly dark, realllly loud and larger than life...that was enough for him. :D Poor kid.;)

 The incredibles. Totally forgot about that one. I have it, too.
That should be a good start.

I love O Brother, but nobody else in this house gets it.
Same with Raising Arizona - despite Nicolas Cage, it's an hilarious movie.

I went looking for the original Gone in 60 yesterday while I was out. No luck. I'm going to have to order it online.

I think the challenge that I haver is that my daughter is sort of in between being a teenager and still being a kid - with regards to stuff she likes.

XL, as for gear, it's sort of a mish mash of stuff that I've been building up over the last 6 or 7 years.

Receiver is a JVC RX-7000V - nothing spectacular but it does a good job. I bought it when my TV room was converted from a small main floor bedroom at the old house.

Main speakers are Paradigm Titans.

Center is a Yamaha NS-C55 and Surrounds are Yamaha NS-E55. Again I bought the speakers when my TV room was small. My plan was to eventually go with bigger Paradigms up front and move the Titans to the rear and get another center. I don't see that happening in this house. My TV room is a good size but it's a weird shape and opens to the kitchen at the back end of the room. I don't see me spending money on better speakers if I can't get them positioned in the room correctly.

Cable box is the Motorola DCT2000 from Cogeco. I'll be upgrading that to the HDTV/PVR unit soon.

DVD/VCR combo unit is a Sony SLV-D300P and does a decent job, but sometimes needs a reboot when you leave a tape in and try to watch a DVD. I honestly think that I will never buy another Sony product just because of the frustration I've experienced while dealing with this thing.

The latest addition is the TV (and the reason for the need for the DVD recommendations.) It's a Samsung HL-R5064W 50" DLP. It's the right size and shape for the room and actually takes up less usable floor space than the 32" CRT that it replaced. It sits back further in the corner and fills the corner more completely. If it weren't for the Paradigms on the stands beside it, the thing almost looks built in. I'll be looking for some low-height stands for those Titans now..

To control everything, I have a Logitech Harmony 680 Remote control. You hook this thing up to your computer via USB, log into your account on the website where you pick all of the devices from a list and tell it what you wnt to do - watch TV, movie, radio, VCR, digital music, etc.. and it downloads all of the codes and the macros to do the job. Almost everything is done with one push of a button on one remote. It's a beautiful thing! And they are getting better in price - Costco has even been carrying a model for a few months now.
When I got the new TV, I went to the website and deleted the old TV from my setup, picked the new model out of the list and said "Set it up for me". It asks questions about what's connected to what - DVD on Component 1, VCR on AV1, etc... and it's done.
