Does this set-up sound bad?

1970 Plymouth Barracuda. 400 bored .40 over with a 727 trans and 3.55 gears.

Most 400's were never intended to be an hp motor, but it's not hard to make it one. If someone bored it .040 they either had some major damage/wear to clean up or they were going for max displacement. But mostly it will depend on many other factors, heads & pistons (comp ratio), cam, intake & carb, exhaust setup. 3:55's is a good choice

Nothing wrong with it at all as a foundation. In fact, it's quite a good one. As far as being a "setup", it isn't one. A setup includes all the specifics mentioned by 68R/T and then some. A stock '77 Gran Fury 400-2V with Lean Burn isn't much of a good setup, but that doesn't mean you can't throw a horsepower party with the block and heads as the guests of honor. The 727 was always a good trans, but there are a lot of variances between the years; the best ones to start with were built in the '72-'77 era, believe it or not.
