Dodge ram speedo question....

thrashingcows

Drowning deep in my sea of loathing...so I'm
Just wonder if there was a year that the dodge ram had a cable driven speedo, but with a 6 digit mileage counter. I have been looking and have not been able to find one. All the 6 digit mileage counters seem to be electronic.

not that ive ever seen cow....as best ive seen they only really made 3 or 4 speedos from the 70's into the 90s...the 80mph units the higher mph units on the 80s stuff the 70s stuff i belive there was only 1 speedo 120?...been a while since i looked...and they made a kph unit right?

That's what I thought...but figured I'd toss the question out there. Actually I just had a thought while typing this...what about a dodge ram van? I know the speedo might not be identical...but I might be able to make it work if there was a 6 digit unit.

I may have found one. Try '92 d250, diesel 2wd auto. It's definitely a 6 digit, and the owner told me today it has a cable plugged into the tailhousing, not a speed sensor.

So that would probably be in '93's too, right?

Look closely... I've seen where a cable leads to the cruise module, where the output to the speedometer was electric. Why? Beats me, but it's a stupid setup.

If it truely is one let me know...I want it!!

But the cruise was electronic in the 91.5-93 cummins rams.

cow if nothing else you could trim the opening on the speedo..modify the captured wheel area for another digit...hell you could add 4 more wheels if you wanted to and it would still read right...all you would need is the wheels from the EXACT same speedo...seems like alot less work to me to just "add" the digit than to try and find something that doesnt likely exist in any form

I've thought about adding a little numbered sticker...but that would look pretty lame in my opinion.

I'll check next time I have access to the truck. I do know that the odometer is 6 digit, and the digits are mechanical, and there's a speedo cable exiting the transmission tailshaft. I guess that does not conclusively prove it's what you're looking for.

There are a lot of "mechanical" odometers that are electrically driven, particularly during that era.

When I worked at the local GM dealer, a kid had taken his Dad's car out while Dad was out of town. I can't remember what model GM it was, but regardless--he'd disassembled the dash and snipped one of the wires to the odometer motor and driven the car all weekend like that. It was Monday and he was in panic mode because after doing a very-nice job soldering/heat-shrinking the wire back together, the odo didn't work. "JUST FIX IT!!" We couldn't, and the cluster would have to be sent out to a specialty contractor and the PCM may have needed repair as well. On a GM, if you cut that wire, the odometer will never work again once reconnected. I told him to go home and take his beating when Dad arrived, and next time around just unplug the damned speed sensor! Sure, you won't have a speedometer (which I consider generally unnecessary in the first place) and you'll get a "Check Engine" light, but at least everything will work when you reconnect it! I think it was Sybesma's Electronics that ended up fixing it, but it's been so long I can't be sure... but when Dad brought the car back to get it fixed, I remember the guy on the other end of the phone laughing... "Why didn't he just unplug the speed sensor?!"

cow you want me to try my hand at making one?..shouldnt be all that hard considering its all stock parts and just needs the back bar lengthened the amount of 1 roller

Well I think the biggest problem, for me at least, would be that the numbers would no longer be centered in the cluster. I could not handle it being off like that. I appreciate the offer 69, but I think I will just live with what I have. If by some small miracle I happen upon an odd ball odo, then I will go that route.

i figured "centered" would be an issue..cause id have that issue myself...and maybe thats why they didnt make one.....i need to have a good loot at the guts of one and see if it could possibily be re-centered with the added didget using stock parts
