Dodge Calibre

restoman

The paint fumes have cleared so I'm
Anybody know anything about them?
Good, bad or otherwise?

Marieanne spotted one on display this weekend and is interested in it.
Local dealer won't have one available for a test drive until Thursday, so a little beforehand knowledge might help her decide one way or the other.

I do know the paint looked decent enough for a new car. Are they Mexican built?

Haven't heard much about them. I do know they're ugly though. That's just my opinion. The Neon was no Ferrari either but it still looked better than it's replacement.

I wasn't to thrilled about them from what I saw in the pics. When I saw them in person in a few different colors they aren't too bad. I don't know... They also bumped the base price up about a grand over the Neon as well. Is what you'll get in the Caliber worth the extra coin? I don't know, but I wouldn't turn one down if I had one given to me.

My wife decided that would be her next car when she saw it at the Autoshow....

I wonder what they'll be like 10 years from now.. 'cause that's likely the next time she's getting a new vehicle.

They seem to be getting good reviews, overall.

I love the cooler glove compartment idea, chilled brews while driving!. I-pod hookups and chilled cup holders are sweet. The SRT for next year is rated at 300HP!

- Less attractive than the car it replaces. (Not saying much as the neon could hardly be considered "attractive" by any stretch of the imagination.)

- More expensive than the car it replaces.

- Worse fuel mileage than the car it replaces. Mebbe I'm misguided, but it seems to me that in the era of $5 gallons of gas, DCX would be working to improve the fuel mileage of it's economy car, rather than turning it into a baby SUV that sucks more dead dinosaurs than it's predecessor.

...All that said, it looks like it may be a practical little vehicle for many people. They seem to be flying off of the lots here - I see them everywhere. I liked the one I drove - as long as I didn't have to look at it.

I have seen a few in person and they look better than in pics. I know in motortrend it did not get a very good evaluation compared to other compacts it was tested with :(

There are quite a few rolling around in my part of town, don't look too bad. They at least stand out from all the cookie cutter cars.

I gotta disagree with that. They look just like the Mazda 3, Pontiac Vibe, etc. and the look from the front screams Dodge truck.

Time may prove me wrong, but I think the Caliber is perfect for DCX at the moment... the SUV craze is thankfully winding down, but people have rediscovered the usefullness of the wagon layout. A high-mileage, small, tall wagon may be the next big thing.

I think they probably should have offered a sedan version, too, though, since they offer no other car in that class and not everyone loves the wagon layout... and they need to understand that the huge grille that so excites truck buyers is overkill on passenger cars. Find a dictionary and look up "proportion", for God's sake.

Yup - pretty much hideous - just like almost everything else coming from DCX these days....

IMO whoever is heading up the styling department deserve to be dragged out into the streets & shot, which is something the goose-steppers at Daimler should be familiar with.

(OK - maybe not shot, but they should otherwise be removed from that position....after being publicly humiliated....) :shifty:

I would agree on your comments and the likely direction that the company is taking. It makes sense and I like the looks too.

I didn't know what to think of the Caliber when I first saw it. Took one for a test drive with the CVT. That takes some getting use too. I'm waiting to test drive a manual version. Have to admit it would make a great part runner. I think they could have done a little better job on the interior. I realize it is an entry level car, but surely they could have eased up on the plastic some how.

I am not a fan of some of the styling but I like the overall design have you all seen it's cool jeep cuz? If we can this with the SRT 300 hp motor look out world rally ex champs.

I think you're right about the next big thing Doc, but if I pick up a dictionary the first thing I'll do is check the spelling of "Caliber". :o

Is it an all new platform, Drive train and all? I am always leery of “first year” cars. You know there are going to be problems that need to be worked out through recalls and warranty work when a completely new car hits the market.
