Do you actually LOOK at your receipts?

This is actually for my U.S. friends. Be careful. It's something I'm reposting here from Facebook.

Start paying attention to your receipts. Pay careful attention to the taxes charged on your purchases. Some large chains, including Wal-Mart and Cabela's, are charging extra taxes, beyond just regular sales tax. The Cabela's thing is supposedly a "Medical Device Excise Tax", whereas Wal-Mart's taxes are coded. I still haven't figured out what the mysterious extra charge for "Tax #7" was when I bought a reactivation card for my phone, but it added over $2 to a $30 purchase (more than the sales tax). I didn't have the chance, but I suggest you do not leave the store until you've had the additional charges fully explained or refunded.

Wow...I will keep my eyes on my receipts up here in Canada too. If they are doing it in one area, chances are they will try it in others.

Seriously... how often do you look? Most times, the receipt stays in the bag and ends up in the trash unless you made some kind of large single-item purchase. Here in the U.S., much of it is being attributed to the "Affordable Healthcare Act" (Obamacare), which is now being predicted to increase your premium for the same level of coverage anywhere from 100%-400%. Chains operating here and in Canada are going to make that money up somewhere, be it through fictitious taxes or higher prices. January 2014 is going to be a hoot for all of us.

oregon..no sales tax....
This wasn't sales tax... it was Tax #7. It was itemized separately from MI state sales tax. It doesn't qualify as a sales tax as far as I could tell, and if it's Federal, it has nothing to do with Oregon state.
