Disaster!!!

Friday evening I installed a clutch fan on the RR in an attempt to cure some cooling issues on these hot summer days. It was certainly moving more air than the flex fan I had on there and a test drive proved it indeed did help. All is good right? WRONG!

This morning I took the car to work and welded in the exhaust cutouts for Friday nights upcoming race and this happened once I fired it up....

Crap on toast, that radiator is FUBAR ! ...got it towed back home and shoved it in the garage...it's parked till further notice, looking at my current finances that will probably be next spring. :(

Ahhhhh CRAP. Sorry. :( Wish I had an extra radiator lying around, I'd ship it out to you.

That sucks...that happened to my dad in his Challenger when the cheap reman Pep Boys water pump came apart

Damn! That sucks man! I never liked those cheep flex fans, they work like ass. The blades flatten out at R.P.M. and don’t pull air through the radiator. When I was racing on the circle track in town here I used a plastic fan that weighed about 4 oz. and pulled a shit load of air. If you revved the engine while working on the car with the hood up it would suck the hat off of your head. I well see if I still have the info on those fans if anyone is interested. It saved a lot of spin weight on the engine and moved a crap load of air. As for your rad, can it be recored? I have a buddy that owns a radiator shop. I can get good deals if you’re interested.

Rejoice! All is not lost, a call to my buddy BJ scored me a factory BB radiator from his 67 Coronet. It occured to me that he had put in an aluminum radiator in his car before his deployment to Iraq and the original one was still sitting in his garage, he gave me the rad free of charge and also tossed in one of those plastic fans stretch mentioned....a true Mopar pal is he.:)

With this radiator I was able to use a proper fan shroud that I had leftover from stripping a 88 Fury squad car, it fits quite nice actually but I had to get creative with mounting it as the holes did not line up.
With the shroud and the plastic fan it's pulling a ton more air than the old set-up ever could have ever managed, now when I hold my hand about an inch or two in front of the radiator and increase the RPM's it sucks my hand into the radiator quite nicely!

All that's left to do is swap in a straight thermostat housing and get the proper upper hose and it should be good to go.
As for what happened, the nearest I can tell is with the car sitting on the frame contact hoist the front end sagged enough to allow one of the blades to catch the bottom of the radiator, thereby bending the blade and creating a $167.50 piece of scrap aluminum.

P.S. Stretch, it was not a flex fan that caused this but rather a clutch type I was trying in place of the poor flowing flex fan....

That's great news!! I was seriously bummed for you, but now I eagerly await race results this week. :nanna:

Ouch on the aluminum rad.....that had to hurt seeing that. Glad to hear that you're back up n running. Time to put some brand X in the rear view mirror !

Yes I realize that. I just went on to that thought without clarifying I guess.
