Today was the Coulee Region Mopar Show which is held at the LaCrosse county fairgrounds about 15 minutes away from home. What with being busy packing and such for the move I had no set plans to attend this year but at about 11:00 this morning the weather looked good and I had the urge to drag out the car and attend.
So I pulled the RR out and went, dusty car and all.
I parked the car on the show field and wandered the swap area meeting up with some familiar faces (Didn't see ya there Dave...did you make it?) when the DJ announced there would be exibition drag racing on the 5/8ths mile oval track located on the grounds. My ears perked up and I scurried off to learn more. :giggedy:
Turns out we were to be the guinea pigs for future drag events to be held at the track and about 12 cars signed up....we had a little of everything mostly Mopars, a 70 Cuda ragtop (belongs to the car show organizer, Thanks Eric.
) 68 RR, 69 Coronet, Mid 60's Valiant, Challenger ragtop to name a few along with a Nova, late model Camaro and a Subaru Forester...don't laugh that Forester made it to the semi final.
The track was a short 350 feet on the front straight of the paved oval and no burnouts allowed as it was all asphalt and the track owner did not want any "divots" on his track. A removable steel plate is planned for burnouts in the future...
Needless to say track prep was non existant and 1st gear was all wheelspin with the car finally hooking on the shift into 2nd for the sprint to the line. It was double elimination and I got the Nova first time out, it sounded fast but I dispatched of it with ease.
I lost one round to the Valiant (very healthy smallblock with a 4 gear) and that was my only loss in the elimination rounds. One more loss and I was out so it was crunch time, time to get serious.
That little Subaru was beating everyone with it's AWD and zero wheelspin off the line, everyone was stunned.
That is until I came up next to it and finally put in down in the final elimination run....the crowd went wild.
The finals had me up against a fella I know from my town in his latest ride, a 68 RR with a very good running warmed over 383. The final was a 2 out of 3 elimination round and he got me by 2 feet the first run and had me worried. The final 2 rounds went to me, once by about 4 feet and in the final run I wupped him soundly and was the winner of the event!!!:nanna: :calvin:
Took my bows, shook the runner ups hand and took the car back to the show field and opened the hood to cool it off before heading home and I was swarmed by people from the grandstands wanting to see the car and congratulate me...Man that was fun, sure glad I decided to attend!!!
