...shall be the death of me, I swear.
I've been fighting one with some sort of software error/bug that no amount of scanning software can seem to locate. It causes the PC to run deathly slow, although now it's much faster. It only takes about half an hour to boot, whereas it used to take over two hours. Of course, with it running that slowly, a virus scan can take over a week. This is not my own PC, but it's enormously frustrating and I'm pretty sure I'll spend part of this weekend doing a reformat/reinstall of the OS.
Now my main PC (a desktop) is on the fritz, but this one's a hardware issue.
I powered it down before work the other day because Al Gore told me I have to do such things. Now, since I built it the same thing has always happened: when powering up after a normal shutdown, the keyboard won't work. The solution is simple, though--just turn it off and turn off the switch on the power supply for a few seconds. It will then work fine. It's an annoyance, but not so much that I did anything about it. However, when I returned from work the other day and tried to start it, nothing. The green light is on at the CAT5 cable, but when I push the switch the only thing that happens is the CPU fan sort of jerks a little. It starts to rotate but immediately stops after less than a quarter turn. The green network light remains lit, but further pressing on the switch does nothing unless I hold it in for 5 seconds, release and press it again. Then the CPU fan does the same thing.
It's done this previously, and messing with cables and so forth (just pulling and reconnecting) has "solved it" both times. This time I've disconnected everything, pulled the CMOS battery, etc. to no avail. I don't believe it to be a power-supply issue but I do have another I could try. The thing is less than a year old, built from a barebones kit from Tigerdirect.
It's very frustrating because I want to upload pics of my new puppy, damn it, and I can't do it from my laptop because the USB port has been inoperative for years.
Ideas?
