Well, if you like, I can limit my posts to that. And go back to coming around here 3 times a year, because that is as often as there is new stuff to see....
Thought it might be nice to talk current events and some of the stuff that's important in my life right now.
Ease up, Hoss. I was just messin' with you. :bravo:
Ugly though the wagon may be, the manifolds are period-correct to the car. It could've been ordered with longrams, which is why I had to jump on them when the opportunity arose. Remember my insistence that it absolutely
had to have a big block? Now you know
why. I am pretty happy that I lucked into the 440. I was content with the 383 I had lined up, but more is always gooder.
They're original manifolds, 69.5. They're just not painted, and when they're not in a completely-dressed engine bay it's a lot more noticeable. Yes, they all look like that... typical quality control for the day. I think a lot of the show cars you see have had the castings cleaned up, though. I'm not going to attempt to hide the MPFI; it's essentially impossible to do that if I want it to work well. Besides, any additional trickery needed to install these monstrosities would not be enjoyable. They don't exactly fall into place... the second manifold has to be turned almost 90° to go through the one installed first. I can only imagine how much fun it's gonna be under a hood.
Anyhow, what's on the stand in that picture represents just a scosche over $1,000 invested, including the $300 to buy the 440. Both throttle bodies are brand new--I bought 'em on sale--and I bought the HP exhaust manifolds at the Jefferson swap (68R/T still has the driver's side, which he's graciously repairing for me). The valve covers were an eBay find, but I may have to abandon those. The longrams sit right on them, and I'm not sure the fins can be ground down enough for adequate clearance. We shall see.
I have no intention of building some wild, solid-cammed stroker behemoth out of this. I'm just going to do a mild 9:1 pump-gas build with a potato cam and the HP exhaust manifolds and call it good. With a 4-speed behind it and some mid-3-series gears it should be a pretty fun cruiser, and short of a Hemi this has about the biggest-ever "Wow!" factor with the hood open. Six Pack guys be like, "Daaayummm!"
