Carroll Shelby's gone...

Didn't know the man personally. I admire what he did, but as much as I hate it for his family, I see no reason to grieve personally. Yeah, I'm a jerk but I don't fawn over celebrity of any stripe.

We're losing the generation that created tbe cars we love.

I don't fawn over or grieve for "celebrities" either but, like you Doc, I admire the accomplishments and creations of guys like Carroll Shelby.

Not only on the "national celebrity" level, but also on the local level. There's very few of the "car" guys that I grew up with left. Us original "hot-rodders" are the ones that gave people like Shelby and the rest of Detroit a reason to build muscle cars. We were doing what the non-mechanical public wanted to buy.

Our reasons for doing it was usually economics. We couldn't afford a "nice" car, so we would buy 2-3 pieces of "junk" and build "our" nice car. Even more often this was done just to provide us with a daily driver. Numerous times, over the years, i've done just that, not only to provide me with a driver, but also to supplement my income as I was upgrading vehicles.
