Car Speaker Grilles.

Not A Duster

Well-known member
I want 'em. Vintage ones from the '70s - from companies like Craig or Automatic radio. I'd like 'em to be in real nice shape in 6"X9" & 6" sizes. I don't care about speakers as I plan to put modern speakers behind these grilles.

As always, I am cheap - so I don't want to spend a fortune on these.

You're a dork--you know that, right?

:D

I'll see what's lying around the boneyards... don't ask about what was in the Road Runner. It never occurred to me that someone would want that crap. [smilie=e:

Hey - I'm hiding my CD player inside an 8 track machine...I'm putting an old superior sterring wheel in, I figger I might as well finish it up right...

What was in the road runner?

There was a big ol' set of those ghastly '70s Craig speaker grilles... you know, the ones with fake allen screws, a big silver gusset across the front with holes for the smaller speakers to fire through, and screenwork straight off an industrial catwalk. They stood about 2" off the rear deck.

I estimate the grilles alone would've cost the car 1/10th in the quarter... and surely they brought extra money at the crusher. :D

It had a big ol' 8-track, too. All gone.

Well - the 8 track I got is a perfect fit.

I mean the CD player will slip right inside the casing like it was built for it. The tough part is going to be figgering how to make the old faceplate from the 8-track hinge downward without the hinges & stuff being too obvious.

You didn't save those grilles?? What kind of pack rat are you?? :D

What are you gonna do with the front ones? Not cutting the door panels I hope?

No - I have two extra sets of kick-panels from various Dart Sports - one already has screw hole in it, so I figure I will put something there.

Hardware store piano hinge... not the cheapest, but you can install it from the inside on the bottom edge and it'd be pretty inconspicuous.

I bet you have a lot of empty soup cans and round cardboard frozen pizza liners.... some stuff is garbage, old chum, and you just have to toss it out. :D

*wipes dust off* "Nope, haven't got a matching pair of 6" x 9" 's" [smilie=e:

you might like this for front speakers without the need for kickpanel issues....

get another 5x9? stock dash mount but cut it out square..you can then mount 2 4 inch(i think thats what i used) into it.. and get good sound with new speakers comeing from the factory dash hole..all hidden

Yeah - I thought of that - we actually sell that stuff here at work - dont' think it will fit, to be honest - the cd player fits like it belongs in the 8track chassis...the downside of which is that it does not leave much space for a hinge...
