Car of the Week: 1959 Dodge Custom Royal

Absolutely gorgeous, it may not have been my color choice, but I have to commend them for their determination and workmanship in bringing a rare piece of Mopar history back from the grave. And opting for the D-500 powertrain totally puts it over the top.

Drive it proud Larry.

My grandmother had a 1959 Custom Royal 4 door, pink with a red roof. Some of the things I remember about it were the rearview mirror on the dash, and when it sat in the Co-op parking lot after the frost plug let go. She got rid of it after that. It was a six cylinder car, must have been a real screamer...

This one here is gorgeous. :)

Grandpa Payant had a '57 D-500. My parents took it on their honeymoon. Dad remembered being powerful, Mom remembers it being thirsty. :D

I'll be like the guy at the car car show........"My dad had one exactly like that" except that it was a green and black 4 door Coronet.
The 361 was strong though, even though it only had a 2 barrel.
He got T-boned a block from home by an idiot in a 55 chevy. That was in 1966 and he had less than 40,000 miles on the Dodge.
My sister and her friend in the back seat each suffered a broken pelvis, the bottom of the rear seat was pushed out onto the ground.
My younger sister in the front seat ended up sitting on the ground outside the car. The old Dodge took the hit and everyone survived. Both passenger doors popped open and that may have lessoned their injuries, but that also could have made it a real disaster.
