Ken Steinke had always wanted to do at least one custom car project in his lifetime. So when he was convinced the time had finally come to customize a car, he chose a car that he already owned and had drooled over since the first time he laid eyes on it.

Customized 1948 DeSotos don’t exactly grow on trees, so the car would definitely be unique. And of course, the name of the car was already a “Custom” in DeSoto nomenclature — the beautiful convertible couple was a member of the Custom Series, one step above the Deluxe models on the DeSoto menu.

Steinke, a resident of Wausau, Wis., wasn’t thinking about customizing the car when he first spotted it. He never even really considered owning such a machine, but a series of unlikely events helped him cross paths with the DeSoto back in the late 1960s.

Great story, and a car I seem to recognize. ;) I was very happy to read that he stayed all Chrysler with the drive train...318/727 and a Volare rear diff. That alone gets the big thumbs up from me! :2thumbs:

How did I know that you'd like this one T.C. ? :hmmm:

A wonder at that....:D.

I had heard the numbers for convertibles in the 46-48 Desoto were far less then the number quoted in the write up. I was under the impression that there were less then 400 units made over the 3 years of production.

Yeah, that sucks. You've got a regular Camaro on your hands now, don'tcha? :D

I did a little digging on a couple of the obscure Desoto sites I check out from time to time. The total production for the Desoto Convertible, from 1946 to 1948....there is no yearly break down of the production numbers..is 8,100 units. As per the run of serial numbers. Clearly I was wrong, and they were right...

My 1948 Deluxe 2dr Sedan is one of 12,751 units produced over those 3 years. If it had been a 1948 Custom 2dr sedan, with rear vent windows, it would have been one of only 1,600. Again per the run of serial numbers.
