If Jerry Allen’s brother hadn’t unknowingly blown a fan belt back when he was a teenager, Allen might not be having as much fun in life as he’s having these days.

The balky belt ultimately led to Allen getting the keys to his sibling’s 1939 Buick, which has accompanied him through the past 55-plus years and turned into a permanent toy that the Omro, Wis., resident never grows tired of.

It took many years for Allen to get the car into running condition and ultimately to the beautiful shape it’s in today, but the time and effort have certainly paid off. The sparkling ’39 coupe is a hit and any weekend car show and a continuing source of joy for its owner — in part because so many people doubted that he’d ever have the car back on the road.

Interesting story and I like the car, but the gray isn't really very flattering. :hmmm:

I like the grey alright, but I'd much prefer the original black.

There was a navy-blue '39 Special in a junkyard not far from here. It was in exceptional condition, other than a dent behind the door in the quarter panel. It was extremely rust-free but hadn't run in years. He claimed he couldn't sell it because he didn't have the title. Stretch and I drooled over it a few times. Sadly, the owner of the yard "crushed out" a couple of years back, and the Buford was one of 'em.

Back around '96 or '97 the shop I worked at did a '38 Buick Opera Coupe. Gainsborough Blue and a grey interior.
I got to take it on it's road test. :) The inline eight was sooooooo smooth.

A long time local friend, (and his dad too) had a 37 coupe w/401, 2x4's & 4-gear. Originally belonged to his dad, but dad was forced to sell back in the 60's because of a divorce. (car held a class record at Great Lakes Dragway for a while) Fast forward to about 7-8 years ago, son is grown, married & kids, decides to track down dad's old Buford. By now it had passed thru 2 owners, one that swapped the nailhead for a 350/350. But still wearing paint from 60's. After much persuasion and cash, car now belongs to Jr. He contacted me to help locate some hard to find Buford-only stuff. Eventually he gets it back to (almost) the way daddy had it. This time it's running a 425 nailhead w/2x4's & 4-gear. (Doc & Stretch may recall me pointing it out to them a year ago as it drove past my digs) And to have some fun and poke at daddy he got a personalized license plate that says, JRS NOW :D
