NASCAR legend and long-time Mopar racer Buddy Baker, one of the first men tocompetitively drive a Dodge Charger Daytona, has a “huge tumor” in his lung which is not operable.
He was quoted as saying,“For those who feel sorry, hey, I’m 74 years old, have great friends, had a career” on the radio. “Do not shed a tear. Give a smile when you say my name.”
Mr. Baker won 19 major NASCAR races, including the 1980 Daytona 500, after starting in 1959.He won races while drivingDodges for Ray Fox (#3), Cotton Owens (#6), the Pettys (#11), and Nord Krauskof (#71).
He briefly set a record of 198.26 miles per hour on one of his leading laps in 1970, in his Dodge Charger Daytona (according toStock Car Racing, August 1970). (...) →
