One-Way
Internet service downstream over cable (1.5 Mbps) and upstream over phone line.
One-way modem installed by SECTV personnel. Customer must have or obtain ethernet card.
what is the "upstream" and "downstream"

Simple....

upstream......what your 'puter sends out

downstream....what your 'puter receives

in some cases DSL is better than cable...and in some cases its the other way around...as in most HEAVY usage areas(ie if your liveing in a rather crowded area) cable can get bogged down since most companys just split your connection thruout the are..in the same situation dsl is useualy faster...but if your in a less crowded area cable is generaly faster

Or if the cable company installed the right gear on their end, you'd get consistent performance from the get-go. And all this "busy neighbourhood" stuff becomes hooey....

My cable company did it right. I've always been able to get good performance out of my connection.

Now, as to your original question: What the HECK! That sounds more like how satellite Internet access works. But even that has evolved into a two way link (with the right LUM and dish).
I'd say if you can get DSL, go with that.
The type of one-way set up you've described is just not acceptable in this day and age. Can I ask the name of the cable company?

By the way, the whole idea behind the two one-way link system is that your clicky-clickies go out over the modem and the content come to your computer over the high speed. So, uploading stuff will be painful. Sending e-mails with big attachments - ouch.

My question...how come only 1500? I am on DSL and I can clock up to 3250... So what is all this about cable being so fast? [smilie=e:

You already know how well the DSL operates in this town, so stick with it...
Cable service is reliable (little to no down time), but I don't know anyone that uses them for internet so I can't even get an opinion.

My cable sux mostly...it was good when I first got it, been crap for quite awhile now. [smilie=s:

My cable is still doing good (knock on wood). I can play host online games with around 12 players with not much lag. And when im a UK server I have a ping off 116 which is great for that distance. dsl suffers in the distance part, you'll get a ping of like 180-210, not that this has anything to do with this topic [smilie=b:

Got cablevision cable, never had DSL so I can't compare, but most stuff loads fast, it's right there on the simple stuff I do, click the page & it's there, the old phone line was slow, a lot of solitare games were played!
big help huh? [smilie=e: Rich.

DD? How much slower? I use the DSL Ultra, and like I said, I can hit mid 3's..... You using Cogeco?

was cogeco ....but i didnt want to pay the $45? anymore

i went the cheap version of DSL whatever that was ...$19.99 is what i am paying now
it takes the pics longer to load up with my DSL but i bet if i went the next step up it would be just like cable

when you say 3 what do you mean?
