befuddled..

Greetings, I have a 65 Plymouth Belvedere II convertible 3spd with a 318 engine. Now I know enough about engines to be dangerous, so I beeseech my fellow mopar nuts to point me in the right direction. I'm sure it's a simple solution and I will beat myself once someone tells me what it is. I started her up and let her run for a few minutes to get the dust out. it was running fine when suddenly there was a loud POP and the engine shut down. Now when I turn the key I get nothing. the lights dim when I turn the key, so I'm thinking something possibly electrical? I'm stumped please help!!!

The "pop" has me a little baffled, plus we could use a little more info.

Start by checking to see if there's a current draw at the battery. Use a test light between the cable & post. If you don't have a test light just use a 12v bulb.
If there's no draw, try jumping it. I have seen batteries go that sudden.

fuseable link go boom?......i can only think of a few things that would "pop"..coil(messy stinky...)fuseable link(useualy followed by fire or melting)....ballast resistor or volt reg?

Were it the fusible link, there'd be no headlights to dim. Personal experience at 80 per on I-43 around 3AM... everything goes out including the lights. Beisdes, fusible links and ballast resistors don't go "pop". Melting doesn't create much noise, if any.

The voltage regulator wouldn't immediately shut down the engine.

What I'm getting from your post is that you have a no-crank condition, not just no-start. If that's the case it's worrisome on its own. The fact that the lights dim tells me your ignition switch is probably OK, and likely your starter relay, but more information is needed. Are you even getting a click from the starter, or starter relay? Have you tried jumping the leads on the alternator to see if it cranks under that circumstance?

How many miles on this engine? How quickly did the engine stop? Was it idling in the driveway or were you on the road? Where were you when you heard the popping sound? Can you say roughly where it originated (dash, underhood)?

Could it be that the loud pop was engine related. Can you hand crank the engine using the fan or a socket on the crank bolt?

One very important question........................

.....why don't you come back and answer all the other questions?

sorry

Sorry, I was never notified that anyone replied. It was idling in the driveway. At first i thought it was a backfire, but when I went to restart it nothing happened. no click, I tried jumpstartin it, nothing. I will try jumping the alternator. I can turn the fan. there is a draw from the battery, again thanks for replying, and I will check back more often.

humor me...run a high guage jumper off the battery to the hot side of the alt...then turn the key on and goto the starter soliniod on the inner fender and jump start it right there with a screw driver....if it still wont crank doing that then your starters most likely toast
