Any woodstove xperts?

OK, got a fireplace in my basement that's not used. The opening has been covered with an ⅛" steel plate. I'd like to put a woodstove in the basement just to help warm that end of the house up a little. Can I just lift out the damper door, and cut a hole in the plate for the flue pipe from the stove; or do I have to make sure the flue pipe turns up inside the hearth and up past where the damper was?

If your laws are anything like they are here, I would check with you local building inspectors to see what to do in that situation. You wouldn't want to burn down your house and have them find you installed something incorrectly without asking.

I totally agree. This is not something for "Joe Handyman" who happens to own a vice-grip! :D

I agree. From what I know about these things from watching TV, you'd likely end up with a flue pipe running all the way up the chimney and terminated on a bracket with a top. That's probably the safest way to do it too. It takes the concern about the condition of the chimney itself out of the equation.

In Canada it's required to run a liner all the way up. Guess I gotta hit the library for this-

not only that, but if you do it incorrectly, you could end up with a nice invisible cloud of carbon monoxide. It'll be the best night's sleep you've ever had, but the last.
