any nuts around?

1980s ford 302 any tricks to preventing a headgasket blowout?..also are the head bolts tty or normal?..and after how many head gaskets should they be replaced.....friend of mine has finaly descided enuf is enuf and is rebuilding the 302..er well im rebuilding it....
any secrets i should know?

I would go to windsor headbolts, which are the next size larger. Just drill out the holes in the head and the block and tap out to the correct size. I ALWAYS replace headbolts regardless of the application. Ive had good luck with detriot gasket sets also. Ford has a tsb out on using a waterglass based sealer on most all vehicles just to be safe

Theres lots of different ones out there, K and N makes one- just check around. Another description is sodium disilicate *egg whites*. They are having trouble with the taurus / sable and T bird 3.8s mostly which have aluminum heads. Not required on a cast iron motor but still not a bad idea either. If they have been fighting it, hard to tell what you will find when you open it up.

well the block has been FULLY dissasembled heads surfaced and a FULL rebuild..anything that helps keep it from comeing apart in the next 5 years is a bonus...this guys doesnt "beat" on his cars but does get on em from time to time...its an 80s mustang with full cobra race suspension, brakes, wheels and trans..302 is vertualy stock

302 is vertualy stock

boooorrring. :D I used to play a bit with Moostangs. Unless you built the poop outta them, they really aren't much of a thrill IMO. Surprized the guy built up the suspenders and didn't hop up the motor.

i know..sad but i did get him to hop it up a bit..mild cam and some stuff he had laying around that never got around to installing...wont be huge but atleast an improvement

The police intereceptor versions in the last carburated years DID have some suds. At least the ones I wrenched on did. We have a retired highway patrolman here who was able to buy his cruiser from the ISP auction when it was done chasing us mopar guys around and transplanted the complete running gear into a 54 ford stepside. This thing has won a few shows and is quite a quick little grocery getter. Yea ford suks and all that but every now and then henry builds something right.:hmmm:

Don't get me wrong. I thing the Mustang is good bang for the buck....but after driving modded ones, a stocker feels like an Impala with 2 cylinders going. :D

funny thing is ..knowing its stock it shure as hell felt strong when i did drive it all 2 times..course he has a full exhaust on it x pipe short throw shifter and some taller gears i think 355's ....didnt feal balls to the wall but would hapily step out of its 16 inch shoes

The last decent running / sounding 302 I owned was in a 68 fairlane 500. ( and I have another one out back in the woods today) I had the cam reground to duntov 30/30 specs and it came alive. Had to wire it like a chevy but who cares? Power curve starts at around 3500 and I dont know where it peaks, never found the top end. Typical small block, lots of overlap and a narrow lsa. I pity the poor bastage that tuned it and didnt do the plug wires one at a time.:D
