Whittier, California 1977 – Summer

There was lot’s of street race action on Whittier Blvd in the mid to late 1970’s. This particular street race happened in the summer of 1977, I was fresh out of Navy boot camp on leave and heading for Groton CT in a few weeks for sub school. It was a week night and things were fairly happening for a week night. We were watching the street races and there was a pretty bad red 1970 Chevelle looking for some action, nice guy running the car, sounded GOOD, he swapped his tires on a side street and was ready to go. There was also a primered ratty looking 1957 Chevy post looking around, the pilot was a long hair nerdy looking dude, but the car was rumored to be a runner. These were both four gear cars. I was asked to be a watcher, while my buddy held the cash. The deal was done and the cars lined up. I was at the end of the run waiting. After the players warmed the skins they lined up and then the start was given. I have to say that the nerd was a good shifter, but the Chevelle had him covered. Man, it was CLOSE. But the Chevelle had him by a foot. The nerd in the 57 was convinced that he won, but I called the Chevelle and that was that. There was a lot of arguing between the racers and the nerd in the 57 accused me of being a buddy of the guy in the Chevelle, but it was not so. The guy in the Chevelle was fixing to beat the nerds ass and there would have been more than a few people willing to give the nerd additional ass beatings. The nerd left $200 poorer. It was just another weeknight in Southern California in a town called Whittier.
