Another guitar question.

I have 3 guitars. 2 Electrics and one acoustic. Seems if I don't play one for a bit, the tuning goes sharp. In the past I have had them go flat, which makes more sense. What causes them to go sharp? They are not near any drafty windows or vents or anything that would cause warping and all 3 necks still play and look straight to me. My acoustic hangs on my wall and my electrics are both in proper stands. Any ideas? Thanks.

-----:)you don,t have them in cases... if they were you would not have many problems of flat or sharpness. having your guitars in the open elements is not a vey good idea. all instruments will go flat and sharp when not played all the time.. if you played everyday say like a house band you would change every 40 hours of playing.if your just playing a few min. a day to keep fresh and limber change every 6-7 months.. some people say boil your strings . that will take off the dirt you get on your strings. that will work in a quick catch and MAYBE get an xtra month. but for all the hassle just change. it just gets you out of a pinch..get decent case to keep them in . you don,t need top of the line. a good 75-100 dollar case with a decent inner lining and your axes fit snugly will be good . and you would,nt have to keep polishing all the time.. just another benifit..it all helps with the elements..always keep instuments from being -sitting or storing from outside walls. like a piano but a good idea for anything musical instr. and that takes in guitars to. you get more moister in them.. and that causes the problem....keeping them in working order takes work. good luck with it Tim. any problems you know how to get me.. :)---good luck from just another guy who knows how to pull strings:bwuhaha:

One thing about the cases idea - especially with the acoustic, if you keep in a case, you MUST put in a humidifier. It will help the others as well, but the acoustic absolutely requires it.

The problem you are having is caused by changes in humidity. There's an ideal level of humidity for most guitar but the real thing to focus on is constant humidity - not how much humidity.

With the advent of the shopping on the net, guitar players and collectors are becoming savvy about what region from which they purchase guitars. If it's drastically different than where they live, there some care involved in acclimating the guitar before putting it into general use.

I keep all of my guitars out in the elements. My 6-string acoustic - my oldest guitar - never moves out of tune once new strings get stretched out. I mean never. It's the bes guitar I have ever had for staying in tune.
The 12-string moves once per season change as far as I have seen to date. I got it for Christmas and it went a bit flat from winter to spring and then a bit sharp when the hot weather hit (and I cranked up the A/C).

The electric went sharp on me from spring to summer but I had also changed string guage from 9s to 11s. The next time I played it, I tried to tune it to itself and busted the 11. When I put it on the tuner, I found everything was sharp..

My brother brought my neice's acoustic guitar over for me to tune and it was cracked at the heel of the neck. She keeps it stored in the case all the time - with no humidifier.

Leaving them out isn't the greatest for the strings, but if you are religious at wiping them down after playing and generally keep the guitars free of dust, there isn't much more you can do short of building a humidified, air-filtered room to store them in.

I have posted this question in a few places and this is by far the most reasonable sense-making answer I got! :) One other guy kinda touched on that but didn't get into it. Thanks DCF! :bravo:
