Aluminum rims...

Any tips on polishing them? I got a free set of American racing (General Lee) rims and they're pretty dingy lookin and oxidized. I swear by Flitz but don't know if that alone is enough to do the job. Any tips on bringing aluminum rims back from the dark side? T.I.A. They would actually look pretty good on the Ford with the free tires I'm getting as well....gotta love friends with race shops! ;)

well it realy depends on the damage or lack there of....my slots had a lil bit of rash to them so i sanded em down with a lil 220 wet and then took some steel wool too em to break the oxidization off then flitzed the hell out of em....without seeing em i cant say what your going to need to do

I never ever said I hated the dukes.

I just love those wheels. Thats all. :)

Now GIVE THEM TO ME! *grabs wheel and runs*

Now you're just getting demanding! :p Oh and what would you do with only one rim?! :wtf::D
Tell ya what, IF I ever decide to get rid of them, you get first dibs, k? ;)

Come back later and steal the other three?:giggedy::bwuhaha:

Thanks for the first dibs!:felant:

Sorry i am lost what rims, are they coated? Slots? Normally on a really bad uncoated wheel that was polished removed the deep pits by sanding down to the pits then use a high speed polisher with a soft al wheel ( I have not seen one for sell but have used them ) When sanding use the highest # grit you can get by with and go finner. I have polished al using just sanding with 600 Grit Diamond Disc but be careful and it is a lot of work.
Now are they like this

If so the finish should be machined not polished and that is a lot more work
:nopics:

Hmmm ok mine are close... those are 10 spoke mine are 15. They do have the ring in the middle like that but not painted. Ok so mine are General wannabe's! :D

But my point was that you should have 2 refinishes on the wheels the part that gets painted on some should be as cast and the shiny edge is either polished or machined bare or coated take a good look. I suspect machined if so there will be little groves or lines in the finish.

fishy the ones he posted are shelbys ...and i dont belive the generals were shelbys

as far as the "machined" finish ...i sanded that off of my slots

I took pics of mine but will have to get the disposable camera developed before I can post them.

His aren't exactly General's but the General did have 10 spoke and is pretty much that rim only w/o the black in the center. His are alot closer then mine anyways...no big, I didn't get mine because they were Generals but just because I thought they'd look cool on the ford...the mounting holes were kinda "ovaled" by the guy that Nick got them from. They came off a Dodge, went to a Ford, then onto his Ford and I think they might fit the Ford and maybe the Jeep...Not gonna mount them on the Jeep though. Small bolt pattern with "ovaled" holes just seems like a bad idea to me! :dgt: Will have pics of my rims up soon so you can see what I'm talking about.

remember many rims were a mild unilug setup requireing nothing more than special washers
No, on these you can tell the holes were hogged out to fit something they weren't intended to fit originally. You'll see what I mean once I get the disposable cam developed and pics posted...hopefully this Friday.
