Hiding In The Bushes While
I love it when things get fixed properly and work.:o

My dad bought 1978 Arctic Cat Pantera 5000, 500cc fan cooled twin from a co-worker of his about 2 years ago.

It wasn't running when he got it but he said he was gonna fix it.

If any of you guys knew my dad you would know that I would end up being the one to fix it and have it work.

Now I'm not trying to put my dad down but it's just he's not as good at fixin stuff as I am.

Anyways, the first year went by and it still wasn't running worth a shit.

He replaced the stator coil behind the flywheel and he finaly had spark.

Changed the ignition coil and wires.

Changed plugs over and over and.............over.

The thing was running SUPER rich and wouldn't wanna go ANYWHERE at 1/2 to WOT.

He stripped out one of the plug hole on one side and took it to some retard in town who then put a Heli-Coil INSIDE a Heli-Coil to "fix" it! :wtf: :naughty:

Then that same retard gave it a "Tune Up" and a "New" drivebelt.

.
.
.
.
.

Still ran like crap.

So...........

Naturally, My dad gave up on it.

Having spent about $300 and still has nothing, he quit.

So....

I was taking to him about a month ago about it and he told me "If you can get this thing to run you can have it.".

So I got to work.;)

First thing I did was I went on the net and gathered as much info as I could about the old girl.

I changed the plugs to the right ones this time, They cost my $10.

Then I went to a used Snomobile shop and got a cylinder head for it, that cost me $35 with gasket.

Then I changed the worn out Jet needle in the Makuni carb with a brand new one from that same shop, The little thing was the main root of the problem and it cost me $7![smilie=2:

Then I changed the drive belt to the proper one, that was $30 for a good used on from the shop.

I fixed the leaky muffler pipe with a $3 repair kit and bought a good used Exahust Manifold for it for $40 to replace the cracked/welded/leaking original.

The whole thing cost me $125.

And........

I got it all back together tonight and took her for a spin and she goes like a sumbitch now! :giggedy:

Needless so say my dad is speechless. :)

I dont see a fan belt in that parts pile list - I hope you just forgot to mention it. The air cooled sleds were great when that all we had but I sure like my water cooled. I traded a 84 GMC short step 4x4 for it and gave it to my dad the year before he died. I kinda owed him one since I trashed his mercury trail twister when I was home on leave before going to germany. That was in 1976. He never rode the merc again even though I bought all the parts to repair it. So be sure to let him take an afternoon to enjoy the fruits of your labor. And remember- FENCES ARE HELL!;)

He's already taken it for a rip, he didn't believe me that I had fixed it.:bwuhaha:

As for the fan belt it was good last year when I changed the pull cord.

Oh you don't need to tell me about fences, I hit one with my Dirt bike a couple years ago, nasty stuff barbed wire.[smilie=2:

Cool - I would do the fan belt again after it sat all summer, cheap part thats like VERY important. Toss the used one behind the seat for a spare.;)

Thanks Guys!

He actually just bought another one.

1996 Polaris Indy Touring, 650 triple (oh yeah she goes!), loaded with options.....................

with a noisy main drive bearing.

Great, and I suppose its enclosed too. At least the ones on arctic kitties are greasable. Ever try to drag one back out of the woods with the track STUCK?[smilie=2:
