A-body 8.25 rear

project74

Trying to find my weed and
No, that's not a misprint :) The search is on and I'd rather deal with someone from here. This is what I need...

Complete, drum to drum, ready to bolt in and go 8.25 for a 74 Swinger. Would like to find a suregrip unit with 3.55-3.91 gears. Springs not important as will be getting new. Somewhere within 300 miles of Detroit would be good as I'd come pick up.

I've looked into the whole 8.75 thing and this thing will never be finished if I dish out that kind of coin. So, what have you got 'nuts?:giggedy:

Man you should have posted 2 days ago! I got tired of my 8 1/4 3.91 sure grip sitting around for the last 2 yrs that i took it to the track last night and sold it for $250.cdn.

Sorry I missed that one Bee.:(

I didn't realize this could be done 69.5. I figured the smaller wheel well/tire clearance of the Swinger, (as opposed to the Duster/Dart Sport), would make this a headache. Don't have access to a welder either and guys are charging ridiculous money for something as simple as spring perch relocation, at least in my area.:hmmm:

well i dont know the details of the rim offset required to make it work in a dart but i can and will say this you dont have to relocate the pearches ..i know many a drag car as well as drivers that are running around on stock b body pearches under A-s.....a 65-67 b rear is the narrowest of the bunch and then theres the 68-70 unit wich is a tad widers...if memory serves the B body rears are only 1.5 inches wider than an A unit....ask a bit and im sure someone can dig up the drum to drum measurements....i had em but lost em on another dead hard drive

74 A-body perch-to-perch 43.02"
track width 55.56"

62 - 70 B-body perch-to-perch 44.00"
track width 59.02"

hey 68 i could have sworn that the early B's were narrower than the later B's and almost willing to put money on it ...that # looks like the 68-70 rear

even still with the right rim offset it will still fit

Here's the complete listing for anyone that wants it;

Rearwidth.jpg

The 1964-'67 axle is narrower than the 1968-'70 piece. I had at least four 1965-'69 axles in my garage a few years ago, as well as an A-body piece (now nestled under Nodda's Demon).

Flange-to-flange, it's 54.25" wide, where the '68-'70 piece is 54.9375". Just a shade under ¾" narrower. Also, the 1962-63 axle is a full inch narrower than the next-gen axle at 53.25"; this housing and shafts were also used in 1964 but only on Max Wedge/Race Hemi cars.

All 1962-'70 B-car axles had the 44" spring-perch spread.

Of course, the '64 axle has the crappy shafts and shim-adjusted wheel-bearing endplay, so the gem of the bunch is the 1965-'67 housing.

In comparison, the A-body axle housing was 52.625" flange-to-flange, so the '65-'67 B-body axle is still 1.625" wider than an original A-car 8¾"--.8125" further out on each end (13/16")... a cozy fit in the formal-rear-wheel-opening Dart body.

HA i thought my memory was serveing me well thanx for the verification doc....i was about to go out and measure up my fishys for verification lol since i know that 2 of the bunch are 66's and one if a 68..dunno what the others are off hand
