A Bad Day......

Well, more or less straight out of the blue, we have had to put our Grizzly-dog down this morning. In a nutshell, he had been getting increasingly more aggressive with us over the past 6 mths. or so, and yesterday, he just went flippo.......

We rescued this beautiful Great Pyrenees from a shelter in Erie, PA, in Feb. '08. He was 16 mths. old. We have had this breed for almost 40 yrs, and I thought from the start that there was something "off" about him, temperament-wise. He had some possession/aggression issues with toys, rawhides, etc. He did pretty well the first year, and was fitting into our home.......we knew what buttons not to push with him. But, for no real reason yesterday, he became constantly growling, then barking and snapping, and very difficult to deal with. I cannot handle a 110# dog if he decides to go at me. I'm sure he had some sort of short-circuit in his brain. He turned 3 yrs. old on Friday.
Godspeed Grizzly.........Oct 9/2006 - Oct 13/2009. The last 18 mths. of your life were spent surrounded by love, and I hope you were happy.
:( :( :(

Aw. That's rough. But better this than than the pain and stress if he'd attacked anyone. You'd have to do the same to grizzly-dog AND someone gets hurt.

While it's not quite the same, we had a pet rabbit that went flippo on us when he got older. There's not much we can do to deal with it and it's plain to see that the animal isn't living a quality life.

Wow, That's really heart breaking. If love alone would have made him whole he would have had it made. Sometimes even that is not enough.

Sorry to hear about this ML. It's hard to put a close member down but when safety and experience rule you do what you gotta do. My condolenses and best wishes for Grizz in the afterlife. :helpme:

Thanks to you all, guys. It helps to have people around who understand, and I know that, as fierce and testosterone-laden as you guys are, most of you have hearts of mush when it comes to our pets.

Love ya all.........

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog, Moparlady.

Similar incidents happened to two friends of mine. Both of those guys were absolutely heartbroken and wondered what they did wrong that these previously great dogs (neither one had ever acted the least bit strange) suddenly flipped out. My only explanation to either one was that some internal wiring shorted and that there was nothing they could have done. In your case of so much time with dogs, particularly of a single breed, that it's more true than ever.

You were the best thing that ever happened to Grizzly--I think you know that--but only now can he be at peace. My deepest sympathies to you and your husband.

I have a heart of mush when it comes to my ex.

Of course when one stomps on something that much, it tends to get mushy. Try it with an orange, tomato, or watermelon. :D

PETS????FAMILY

Sorry for your loss, I know how attached one gets to a furry member of the family. This is a pic of my soon to be 18 year old daughter in Febuary. I'm terrified for the day of inevatability. Bless her and Grizz.
