8.75 value

Trying to find my weed and
I've got a good line on a 72 B-body 8.75, just the housing. Nice strait piece with no heavy scale. Guy wants $150 for it. I'm just wondering if $150 is a decent price for a good housing or if that's a little high.

i have no idea, but i know i am looking for complete rear ends hoperfully A-body with 5 on 4 1/2 BC and 355

otherwise i may have to go whaky whaky on the one i already poses out of a C-body

Well, it's worth what you'll pay for it, I guess, but a clean bare housing is worth maybe half that to me. For $150, it should at least have axle shafts and it better be really, really nice. I get 'em complete from my favorite wrecking yard for $75-$125, pig and all... regardless of casting number, diff type, or gear ratio I've never paid more than that.

DD2, there's no such thing as a factory 4.5" bolt-circle A-body 8.75", so if you hope to find one it's going to be one someone converted (hopefully not by redrilling the axles). With a 3.55 and a Sure Grip, you're near the four-digit price range. When the economy was stronger, I'd seen them go as high as $1800. Your best bet is to find a '65-'67 B-body axle. It's just a little bit wider but a whole bunch cheaper, and A-body guys have been using them for years. A 3.55SG pig is still a pricey proposition, though... that's the most sought-after ratio, based on when I was selling 'em. I've probably had twenty-plus 3.55 gearsets, and they always brought premium bucks particularly in an assembled pig. 3.91s and 4.10s were popular as well, but never seemed to bring the money of the mid-3 gear.

I never did keep a set of 3.55s for myself. I did, however, keep my NOS 3.36 gearset... ideally suited to an A833OD trans.

Best bet? Hit the boneyards, and look in pre-'75 trucks, particularly Sno-Commanders.

Thanks Jass :) It did seem a little high to me, thus my asking. Really just starting to seriously consider all it's going to take for a full big block conversion on a short budget. Not in a rush so I'll just keep my eyes peeled.

Even a bare A-bod housing is a very-pricey affair unless you luck out. I don't know what you mean by "aftermarket", but it doesn't matter anyhow since they're expensive either way.

Best thing you can do from a cost standpoint, if it absolutely must be A-car dimensions or narrower, is to have your C-car axle and shafts narrowed. Done by a professional shop like Moser, it's cheaper than a bare A-car housing w/no shafts, and I can vouch for the quality of their work since I've had them cut and respline C-car axle shafts in the past. They did a beautiful job; a pair of their cut shafts resides under Not A Duster's Demon, for which I built the entire rear axle assembly, drum to drum, pig and all. I lucked into that A-car axle at a nearby boneyard and sold the shafts, drums, and backing plates on eBay. I gave the 3.23 open 741 pig to my good friend Kev and used the housing to build Nodda's axle with the shortened C-car shafts.

If you have some room, though, I'd still strongly suggest the '65-'67 B-car axle.
