67 Dart Post Project Update 340-6 Pack 4 Spd Pistol Grip Max Wedge Scoop/oddball

"A MOPAR FOR EVERY MOOD"
I thought I would share my little 67 Dart build up. I am a total novice and am learning every step of the way. I know the E bodies a little better and have been in the hobby for years but am new to a lot of this.

I love the darts and A body barracudas and hope to build a HEMI project in a A body cuda or dart soon. Hope you like the car, and I hope i Dont upset the purists!

I am still working on this off and on. Its kind of slow as I did the paint this past summer/ fall. I am basically a poor broke boy and cant afford all the nice after market disc brakes and high dollar parts. so as I stumble across items, I start them and learn and so on. It started as a /6 three on the tree post car. My boss owned it since new, an old Sergeant I worked for.
I started it as a driver and was going to just slap that ole max wedge scoop on it and drive it. Then I decided that it needed some color and well, you know how that goes. Then I was thinking Big block dart. So then I find a killer deal a buddy wants to sell this 340-6 pack motor all built and done ballanced with original 6 pack set up for 4K, the only high dollar item on my list. It would have cost me more to build my 72 440 core motor. I had a 4 speed A body trans and a small block bell housing, so I was off to the races.
I did most of the paint and the engine bay this summer/fall. I still have the mirrors and a few small items to go. I am no pro but once againc ant afford to hire it out and have built my shop for this stuff.
Then a guy called me this fall and said I have a FREE 4 door parts dart/1970 in Grass valley, several hours away. I would not have grabbed it but it had a 32 SG. 83/4 A body rear end in it, no disc brakes. on it. One issue, it had to picked up the folowing day. So off i wnet and here it is, now out and stripped down to bare metal. I am adding big rear drum brakes and rebuilding it as I learn.
Then this past week, I find a 74 duster gold duster and it has disc brakes. I get a great deal on it. Now its sits here and I am learning all the aspects of this change. So here is the link if interested. http://www.smithvalleymopars.com/67_hemi_dart.htm

I am now trying to get my hands on another freebe a A-100 van that a guy wants taken to the salvage yard. I am hoping for the front seats in bucket form and SS type seats and brackets for that very cool look. Its getting a huge B body pistol grip shifter as I am partial to that look. Just hope I dont hit my knuckles on the dash.
Here some pics.

I am looking at tires and rims as I am still searching for the right look. I have some finished 14 inch 500s here but wanted 15s and the fat look in the back. I am on this project until its done and my 70 Cuda vert which was finished the same basic way is angry and upset at me as I have basically left her for the dart.
By the way I am kind of thinking of another hood option now and looking for a second hood for a change when I fell like it from week to week. I have the dual scoops and a dual snorkle scoop both original and thought maybe I could do that look fromt time to time.

love the colour. will look good when done. i can see that whenit gets shadey outside the colour will change darker. i like it. gonna double stripe the back. :)

Gee, you move pretty fast. :) For me, the maxie scoop just doesn't seem to flow right with the body, don't know why. Maybe pushed forward a bit.

Well, I am kind of in the same boat and somewhat agree but am waiting until I get it together to make my final decision. I started this car as a /6 driver. I had the scoop which I got from AAR fiberglass and it sucked to say the least.

I put it on this car instead of using it on my 64 fury that I have since sold.

Then I decided to put some $$ into the car and gradualy it became this project.

SO i MAY CHEANGE the hood down the road if I dont like it but it cant go further up. We shall see down the road.

I'm digging the hell out of this project!

Hopefully, this will help:

The '71-'74 B-body bench-seat pistol grip fits the A-car like it was born there, in case you're interested. Just bolt the handle into the stock A-car mechanism and use the factory shifter rods and mount. The long '70 unit would likely sit too far back since the A-car shifter mount is further rearward than the B-car mount. This also holds true of F/M/J-bodies if anyone's interested.

For the big-bolt axles out back, Moser can cut and respline stock truck or C-body axle shafts for around $100/pair. The only issues are:
  • A) if the axles come from a truck, make sure it's the 4½" bolt pattern; I've found trucks back to the mid-'60s with the larger 5" Ford/Jeep pattern (they're more common than you'd think);
  • B) Measure the distance from the outside of the wheel flange to the last undercut near the splines. It must be at least 28". I don't think I've found a set of C-car shafts that weren't right; they're so common Stretch has like 3 pair of 'em.
Moser won't have to mess with the heat-treating nor do they disturb the bearings/seals. This is what I did on Not a Duster's rear axle, and I can vouch that the quality of work is first-rate and the turnaround time is amazing (I had them back in-hand in 9 days). It's the fast, easy way to big rear brakes. Just use all the brake parts from the same vehicle; for such a light car and ease of locating parts, I'd suggest a mid-'80s M-body, which had 9" or 10" diamter, 2½" finned drums. The whole setup is a bolt-on deal, even though the M-cars had the smaller 8¼" rear axle.

With the post roofline, I actually like the hood... but I think the sport mirrors are out of place on such a blocky body style. I'd go with the round chrome units myself.

Yep thats the one I ma using. I am going to go ahead and buy ione new. I already ahve some cut down big bolt pattern axles. I am going shopping today in hopes that I can find all the seals to redo it locally. If so, I will get that dont this sat-sunday and try and check the third member out first and make all is well. I dont think I need bearings but have a friend from here Cody Corbett coming over to help me out as I am a total novice.

we shall see.

for the mirrors to look "right" imo id run the 67-70 chrome remote mirrors..they have a blocky touch to them that look "right" on darts

I gotta agree with most of the replies. I like where you're going, for the most part. The scoop would be "period correct", but it's mostly a matter of personal taste.

The mirrors.....save them for a cumero. :dgt:

THEMS no Craparo mirrors, them duster mirros from a 70 Duster, the expensive sport mirrors. I have not put them on yet or even held them up but will do so after I get this drive train in and finished.

so you never know.

LAWFISH and thanks for the replies. I would relay like a GTS hood, but then again too much $$$$$$.

I knew that, but they are "sport mirrors" with flowing "sporty" lines, which go wel on a car that has flowing bodylines. A dart has a more square non-flowing bodylines. I've seen sport mirrors on square bodied cars and it is just WRONG.:dgt:

Looking great! Not to dis, but I would go the old flat chrome mirrors too, but hell, it's your car!! Enjoy!!

I may have to see which ne slook better. For the $$$ I can get for the sport mirrors on ebay, ifr I dont like the look I can sell them and buy more parts. I have a set of regular mirrors, although non remote.

Dave

lemmy see if i have some pic's of the "remote" versions....imo they look perfect on a dart due to the sharp edge line they have running up the back side
