66 Newport engine swap.

This space for rent
Got a start on it today. Installed a new Comp double roller timing chain that has been gathering dust for the last year or so into the replacement 383. [smilie=c:

The actual swap is scheduled for this Saturday, but I don't expect to have it running yet this weekend as I am also doing the electronic ignition swap at the same time and Sunday being Mothers day and all will use up some of my free time.

Not looking forward to dealing with all the A/C plumbing on this thing...hope it still works after the swap is finished! [smilie=e:

A little more progress today,Harmonic balancer and water pump put on and cleaned the old header gaskets off the heads.
Wandered out to the car and started loosening the A/C lines and hit a problem area. [smilie=e:
Exactly the area I was worried about [smilie=e: ,A valve next to the firewall that has delicate little tubes soldered to it won't come loose. No hex on it to put a wrench on it for leverage and I am afraid of phockin it up.I will take a pic of the offensive Lil' bugger tomorrow...had to walk away from it for now. i know the feeling there beeper. you always find something that causes a problem.

i was putting my valvetrain together today and found i had 3 bent pushrods out of the box. i called crane and they're gonna warranty them, but it looks like my buddys wont be coming down here the 16th to help get it running. it'd be an act of god if those new ones got here in time.

got any 9.250" pushrods for adjustable rockers and hydraulic cam? [smilie=e:

Here it is,note the position of the valve cover..

...the valve(?) is directly above it. [smilie=e:

A closer look reveals the delicate nature of this part.

The line to the right of the valve needs to come off as it will be in the way of lifting the engine. Notice the small tubes connecting the two lines to the valve. With this item sitting out of the way during the swap it's one less thing I have to worry about damaging. [smilie=w:

Soooooo,at 7:30 this morning I went after it with a no prisoners attitude and 10 minutes later it was disconnected. [smilie=e: Now I can move both lines out of the way by laying them on the hood springs.

8:00 AM...time for the J-O-B. [smilie=s:
Got caught up at the shop in the late afternoon and the hood came off and the coolant is drained.

Now is [smilie=a:

Tomorrow the real work begins. [smilie=c:

Out with the old....

Notice the slightly newer lower mileage replacement sittin on the floor waiting to be installed.

No swap is complete without problems yanno. [smilie=r:
The water pump housing is different from a non-air to air car,of course I did not realize this until I went to sit the A/C pump on the replacement mill. [smilie=e: [smilie=mad.gif]
Also found a hole in the Y-pipe so the dual exhaust that I was gonna hold off till next year will need to be done now.Might be a couple weeks now before I get it back on the road. [smilie=e:

The engine is bolted in and thats it...had enough for now, just need to hook up everything on the top end and the radiator brackets need to be re-soldered.

Here it is....

Damn, thats a hellofa days work! [smilie=e:
those a/c bypass tubes complicate things don't they!
aahhhh who needs a bleed of, just cap em! [smilie=e: Rich.

You forgot the paint. [smilie=n:
No......No I did not. [smilie=w:

No time or desire to paint it up pretty...won't make it run any better and this is a driver that will only get the hood opened for service...not for show.
Perhaps someday whan I am bored and ambitious I will paint the valve covers...maybe. [smilie=a:

Little more progress to report.
Installed new heater hoses and the A/C lines are loosely connected (didn't grab the wrenches),apparently I lost one o-ring but I found a replacement. [smilie=c:
My boss soldered up the loose radiator mounts and I flushed it out. Pretty nice shape for a 37 year old part! [smilie=e:
Also ordered new hoses and belts and dug out the patterns for building the exhaust.
So far it is looking good for gettin it back on the road this weekend. [smilie=e:

It lives! [smilie=a:
The 66 is back on the road! [smilie=e:
Barney stopped by today and lent a hand gettin her going again and it sure feels good to be driving it again. [smilie=c:
The electronic ignition swap still remains to be done for another day and the tailpipes are crooked but thats an easy fix. [smilie=w:
Sounds nice with the dual exhaust and the oil pressure gauge stays above 25 lbs. [smilie=c:
