408 Stroker Question.

Cool, You guys do know I'm building one for the New Yorker.

The cam was going to be mild enough to need a stall converter.

Not only is it viable, if it's just a driver you can do it relatively inexpensively... no need for the steel crank, forged pistons, etc. The torque would be great for lugging that animal around. Stay in the mid 9s on compression and use a mild cam, and it'd be a great driver.

ya rite DIPPY. just a daily driver. after seeing you in the movies and you want me to believe that ? ya just a daily driver after 3 sets of tires on the back and a short cut thru 6 feilds and a quick stop at the parts store....105 of rubber. yup thats a dailey driver in DIPPY COUNTRY. i love it--------------:bwuhaha:and the only thing that wouldstall that car would be a 5-2 blondein 6 in heels looking at DIPPY and an oak tree in the middle of the hood.

Sorry there Orvil but my Green Machine (New Yorker) Will only see pavement, and it will never see winter driving. :) I leave the abuse to the Ford at the farm and the wagon. :D

My plan is to use my '97 5.9L, scat 408 forged steel crank, Diamond pistons (I can't remeber any specs on the pistons but they are around 9.5-10.0 CR), Stock Magnum heads and probably a Comp XE286 Roller cam. Too big?

Plans are to run either a 727 or a A-518 with a stall converter and a 9.25 SG with 3.90's.

I'd go with the 518. The OD will help to keep the MPG reasonable for a daily driver. My 2cents.

Why drop the coin on the forged crank and pistons? For what you're doing here, you could save a ton with the cast crank and hypereutectics... You'd save like $700, if not more.

On the cam, once again, I say "call or fax the manufacturers of your choice and get their recommendations."

Because I scored a new never installed crank, rods and pistons for a set of used ported 440 heads, a set of crane gold roller rockers and $450. :shifty:

The heads and rockers I paid almost nothing for anyways and I found someone that needed them more then me. :giggedy:

I'd guess 23MPG, assuming a really, really mild cam, headers with free-flowing exhaust, multi-port injection and a truly light foot. Carbureted, probably 15MPG average.
