If there's no leaks, do I really have to make a special tool and press the reverse idler out to replace the shift lever o-ring?

Do you leave it and hope it doesn't become the "weak link"?

If you're gonna have everything else out, I would go the extra step and replace it, then you can sleep at night and not have to worry about tearing it down again for a lousey "O"ring.

mr340 pretty much sums up my opinion. it might be a pita now but if the o-ring goes bad later then not only will you have your original task but you will be saddled with the additional task of pulling the tranny [smilie=e:

Too late, I took the easy way out. I'd be another 3-4 hours rigging up a tool, using it, breaking it, fixing it, using it again, etc.
FSM says only if leaking, so I went with that since it agreed with my lazy ass.

So far the only thing I forgot was the tailshaft gasket. Noticed that right after I finally wiggled the main shaft into position and it dropped in. [smilie=e:

Now that's it's back together, I get asked "you did replace the cluster gear shaft, didn't you?" by a guy that's giving me e-advice. That would've been good to know 3 days ago when I first tore it apart and started asking about synchros.
No, it's not someone on this board ... and where's Jass anyway? I could've used one of his insta-manuals on how to do this. I bet everything I've bumped into would've been explained by him, up-front.

Well we know he has a new job so thats taking up some time but mabeye hes found a new squeeze too? Dont second guess yourself too much, if it worked ok before it should be fine. The only thing I like to do is install steel forks because Im half gorilla and break brass ones. Stuff it in and go test beat it. [smilie=e:

I hope that whatever's keeping Jass busy is keeping him happy too.
The trans is in, but no clutch linkage yet. Heading out as soon as my Cheerios settle down some. I was out there until 1 last night, things go slow when you work alone.
Right now I can't get it out of the garage ... we dug the gravel off to pour concrete outside the door, and haven't gotten it finished yet. Supposedly this week. The bulged discs in my lower back won't let me do that kind of work anymore so I had to hire it done.
