I have serious issues, so I'm
are just too much fun. Especially paired with a smallblock in an A-body.
Piggy and I (well, mostly Piggy, I did more parts hunting) yanked the 727 out of the Dart and replaced it with an A833.
We got the trans, bellhousing, and shifter, along with an LD340 intake and a 600cfm Holley carb at a swap meet for $100. Found a used 340 flywheel and had it machined locally for the externally balanced 360. I found a used floor hump for $50 online. We got the rebuild kit for the trans from Brewers. Found various parts at junkyards (shifter rods, extra shifter) and swapmeets (Z-bar and Z-bar rebuild kit). Got a new heavy duty Ram clutch and pressure plate, which was the biggest purchase (around $400). Got a set of A-body shifter pedals online for $50, they just needed to be cleaned up and painted. A great guy on Abodiesonly.com sent me an old school white shifter ball for free.
That's most of it, I estimate over a grand for the conversion, but others have told me they spent 2-3 grand, so I suppose we didn't do too bad. It was well worth it for the fun factor, the car is a blast.
This is my first old school four speed, my daily driver is a 5-speed manual truck but that is easy compared to this. The shift pattern is so close together that I can see how people miss a shift on it. The first intersection I stopped at, I put it in fourth thinking it was first and tried to take off and almost stalled it. I quickly found first and saved it. Of course this was right next to a busy bike path with a bunch of people watching me. *blush* ALWAYS has to happen like that.
Our $100 score, dig that baseball shifter knob.
LD340 and Holley carb that was included in the deal.
Believe it or not, the workbench is super clean compared to what it usually is. :shifty:
Rebuilding the trans
Piggy can now do 727, 904, and A833 transmission rebuilds.
Original floor hump
Scary big hole that had to be cut. And we did make the carpet fit back over it, so that was a plus.
Before shot of the pedals, I forgot to take an after shot.
I think there is chrome under that ugly black paint on the shifter. One day I'll look.
3 pedals are cool. And they are already filthy as is the carpet. This ain't no pampered show poodle.
