1989 Dodge Shelby - Auction - Reno, NV - 1989 Shelby Dakota--first rear-wheel drive vehicle build by Shelby in 20 years.
Based on two-wheel drive short-wheelbase Dakota Sport.
Replaced 125 hp 3.9 liter V6 with throttle-body fuel-injected 5.2 liter 318 CID V-8.
To make V-8 fit, cooling system modified by replacing standard belt-driven engine fan with twin electric fans mounted in front of radiator.
Engine otherwise remained completely stock.
Modification added 5 extra horsepower--total to 175 hp at 4000 rpm.
Torque measured 270 lb-ft at 2000 rpm.
Redline set at 4750 rpm.
Dual snorkel air cleaner with SHELBY V8 decal.
Transmission--4-speed automatic with locking torque converter.
Axle ratio 3:90:1 with a SureGrip limited slip.
0 to 60 in 8.7 seconds; the standing quarter mile--16.5 seconds at 82 mph.
No manual transmission available.
Heavy-duty suspension.
Gas-charged shock.
Shelby five-spoke aluminum wheels with 225/70HR-15 Goodyear Eagle GT+4 radials.
Anti-lock rear braking.
Every Shelby Dakota came with same interior. The standard package included:
Leather-wrapped Shelby Signature steering wheel with Shelby logo horn button.
Supportive bench seat with center armrest and special Shelby charcoal sport cloth inserts.
Matching door panels.
Full set of informative gauges including tachometer.
Personalized nameplate with Shelby Dakota’s individual production number.
Izumi, Shelby’s steering wheel manufacturer.
Exterior available in only two colors: red or white.
Bold Shelby graphics covered hood, sides and rear.
‘V8’ decals appeared on each fender; "Shelby" decal ran across top of windshield.
Front air dam, unique to Shelby Dakota, had integrated driving lights with fender extensions.
Additional Shelby features--sleek-looking, bed-mounted fiberglass light bar and Shelby badge on front grille.
As with all true Shelby vehicles, a one-year production. 1,500 built.

I realize they were a one-year-only item, and they were pretty snappy during that dismal time period. but they never really hit the mark and it showed in the sales numbers. I know a guy that bought one new. He liked it but he was never really "excited" about it.

They'll never come near the following that the LRE has. :hmmm:
 
"Snappy" due to gearing. Anyone that's ever driven a TBI 318, Shelby or not, knows they run like a scalded sloth. Party's over by 4,500. :(
 
My stone-stock '72 Satellite sedan would pull a little over 5,000. It would also beat this truck if it had similar gearing. :D
 
I don't really know what kind of RPM range I have with my teener. With 2:76 gears I pretty much get tired of waiting. Besides, they do their best work between 2k and 4k. :hmmm:
