1976 Lamborghini Urraco - Auction - Westport, CT - 1976 Lamborghini Urraco P300Among the great names in Italian performance cars is the name Lamborghini. Ferrcio Lamborghini built his first performance car in 1963. Known as the GTC 350, it made its debut at the Turin Auto Show in 1963. Sales of the GTC were impressive and laid the ground work for the Miura, the Countach, Diablo, and the Murcielago. In the present day, Lamborghini maintains a solid reputation for building some of the world’s finest supercars. Nestled firmly in Lamborghini’s history is the Urraco. Introduced at the Turin Auto Show in 1970, it was a car that would write its own chapter in Lamborghini’s history. As a 2+2 coupe with a body designed by Marcello Gandini working in cooperation with Bertone, it offered great performance while offering seating capicity for four passengers. Production for the Urraco ended in 1979 with a total of just 791 built.
The Urraco offered here is a stellar example of Lamborghini’s heritage. Its beautiful and well balanced design is accented by a Blue Notte finish. This fine example still retains an orignal finish and is in outstanding condition. This Urraco has never suffered from any accident or rust damage. Most interesting is the fact that at the time of production, bodies and sub-frames for the Urraco were brought directly from Bertone and assembled at Lamborghini without spending months in outside storage, thereby enhancing and protecting all sheet metal components. The interior of this Urraco is superb featuring a tan color with a special factory ordered black leather instrument panel. All components are in excellent condition and the entire interior presents as new. As a 77,000 kilometer automobile, it has led a pampered life that has preserved it in pristine condition.
A special chapter was written in this car’s history in 1987 when it became the subject of a $50,000 engine development program. Headed up by noted marque specialist R. Võsari, the intention was to increase horsepower while building an engine that could handle the performance duties of such a car by maintaining complete reliability. Improvements were made to the oiling system, cylinder sealing integrity, connecting rods, pistons, valve train, and bearings. Modifications were also made to improve cylinder head airflow by using an epoxy vacuum sealant on the cylinder heads. The end result is a car that offers spectacular performance with complete confidence on any tour.
The Urraco featured here also retains its full documented records; show that it was built in September of 1976 and delivered to Achilli Motors in Milan, Italy in October of the same year. Its first owner was the son of a textile magnate and during the course of his six year ownership the vehicle was regularly serviced by either Achilli or the Lamborghini factory; all factory work orders and invoices are available. The current owner purchased the car in late 1983, with Classic Cars SRL in Milan acting as brokers. It was then imported to the U.S. in the summer of 1984 and has all of its applicable DOT and EPA compliance documentation. The vehicle has been used on a regular basis and all systems and components have been overhauled or replaced. Particular attention has been devoted to improving handling and braking without compromising the excellent original suspension compliance and drivability.
This Urraco is a stunning example of the Lamborghini tradition of fine performance cars. It is a car that has been well-cared for and never abused. Its lineage is also fully documented thereby maintaining its pedigree. It is a car that is a pleasure to drive while maintaining a commanding presence on any show field.
