1970 Plymouth Barracuda - Auction - Westport, CT - 1970 Hemi Cuda
Muscle cars have always represented a fascinating chapter in automotive history. For just a few years, the streets were ruled by big-block Chevelles, Boss Mustangs, and Chevy Corvettes. While many of these feared competitors had their fair share of starts from the red light, there was one competitor that stood tall among the giants. One glance at the hood was all it took for many competitors to back down. Quite simply, if the word “Hemi” was on the hood, your cash was better left in your pocket than taking a chance against the incredible Hemi Cuda. It all started in 1966 when Dodge fitted the massive and extremely powerful Hemi V-8 into the small E-Body platform. The idea of a massive engine stuffed into a small body wasn’t new, but the Cuda proved to be a perfect combination of power and weight. With gas prices climbing the end was near and by 1971 it was all over. The era of the super musclecar was done and cars like the Hemi Cuda were relegated to the used car lot. The present day collector value of these incredible cars has reached breathtaking highs in recent years.
Offered to the discriminating collector of fine muscle cars is this pristine example Mopar’s performance heritage, a 1970 Hemi Cuda. Low mileage collector cars are certainly a rarity, and while there may be a few sedans and wagons out there that lived a garaged and pampered life, a muscle would have lived and died a quarter mile at-a-time. That’s what makes this superb example of the muscle era so special. With just 9,800 miles on the odometer, this Hemi Cuda is a time capsule of originality and authenticity. Finished in Alpine White, its sheet metal is all factory stock and has never seen a repair or rust. Its black interior is all-original and still carries its new-car look and feel. This Hemi Cuda has been called a benchmark example of this fine musclecar and it has served as a blueprint for factory authenticity on other restorations. Outstanding features on this fine automobile are the numbers matching engine, original glass, factory stock sheet metal and an incredible array of documentation as well. Power for this outstanding musclecar comes from its factory stock 426 cubic-inch Hemi V-8 with twin four-barrel carburetors and a 10.25:1 compression ratio mated to an upgraded four-speed transmission. All of these components mean that the Hemi Cuda pounds the pavement with a full 425 horsepower adding extreme thrills to the motoring experience of a true musclecar. This Hemi Cuda is also part of the Checkered Flag Hemi pair, also known as the Polar Bear and the Dairy Man Delight. If performance is not enough, other features on this Hemi Cuda are a Pistol grip shifter, the hemi Cuda signature black hockey stick side stripe, a 4.10 Dana rear-end, and optional rally wheels. This “Cuda” is also a celebrity, having been featured in several magazines and calendars. As a true time capsule, it is not a restored car, but is a beautifully preserved example of this truly exceptional performance car.
The legacy of Mopar’s performance heritage is proudly displayed in this Hemi Cuda. A car can be restored many times over, but it’s only original once. This powerful automobile from a bygone era will surely be the centerpiece of any muscle car collection. Ownership of such an outstanding example of the muscle car era as this preserved example is a rare opportunity. In the end only 652 of these incredible cars were built in hardtop form and they are truly one of the rarest and most sought after collector cars in the market today.
