I dunno... I always considered it one. Dimensionally, the block is small... no bigger than an LA.

In 1955 it was the "only" V8 block.

.....besides the Hemi. :shifty:

In relation to the Hemi, the poly is small, but have you ever heard it referred to as a "small block"?

In relation to the B/RB, it's also small... and yes, I have heard it referred to as such. In fact, I do so myself. It's not a "wide block" as people often say, nor is it dimensionally any larger than an LA. The only real differences are from the head surface up, other than the fact that the Poly isn't a thinwall casting (you can punch the 318 Poly .125" over safely).

I understand what you're saying; it's sort of like the Pontiac V8. There was no big/small block, it was just a freakin' block for years. Then the 301 and rarely-seen (late) 265 showed up. They are actually smaller Pontiac V8 blocks that will not accept intakes & such from the other engines. When someone says they had a '78 Trans Am with a "big-block 400", yes, I want to slap the shit out of them but they're technically correct. Instead I usually say, "Oh... too bad about the Chevy (or Olds) engine." :D

......... "big-block 400", .........."Oh... too bad about the Chevy (or Olds) engine." :D

How many of the morons actually know that chevy made a small block and a big block 400? Technically it was a 402, but chevy even referred to it as a 400 at first.

Not many... and a lot of them don't get the Olds reference at all, not realizing there are big- and small-block Rockets. 400 = big block, 403 = small block... apparently, it took Olds a while to realize how big their small block was, kind of like Chevy's 400SB.
