wait...8volt battery?!?!?!?

Yup....it's an old trick going well into the 6-volt era. many people weren't happy with the cranking speed of the old 6-volt systems, so the battery manufacturers added another cell to make an 8-volt. It was recommended that you install a voltage-drop resistor to protect the accessories and lighting. And generator re-charging was somewhat marginal if you made a lot of short trips.
 
The 8V battery was actually originally an agricultural piece. I've sold a few for both tractors and 6V cars over the years.
