1955 DeSoto Fireflite - Auction - Westport, CT - 1955 DeSoto Fireflite Convertible
When Walter Chrysler introduced the DeSoto name in 1929, it literally changed the automotive industry over night. Never before had the motoring public seen a car of such beauty at such an outstanding price. With extravagant names like Roadster Espanol and Sedan de Lujo, DeSoto’s model names conjured up visions of grandeur at a price the general public could afford. DeSoto would spend the next 32 years providing solid and reliable transportation to motorists all over the world.
Fast forward to the 1950s when the American automobile was in its zenith in terms of styling and here we find cars like this beautifully styled 1955 DeSoto Fireflite convertible. Virgil Exner’s all-new “Forward Look” made its debut on DeSoto products this year and the general public loved it. Styling was longer and wider than any other DeSoto before it. Long sweeping body lines, gorgeous interiors, and outrageous colors meant that DeSotos made a styling statement wherever they went. The Fireflite was DeSoto’s top-of-the-line car for 1955 and this one is nicely finished and finely detailed in Emberglow and Black; it is truly a Fireflite convertible that is a pristine example of the flamboyant 1950s. A finely detailed leather interior features the correct DeSoto patterns with a power seat and power top. This Fireflite rides on wire wheels and all paint and trim on this magnificent car is outstanding. It is also finely detailed from its impeccable engine compartment to its well manicured trunk. Indeed, nothing was overlooked on the restoration of this fine piece of American artwork. It is a car that is superbly detailed in every way and is brilliantly restored with the utmost attention paid to detail in both fit and finish. Turnpike cruising is made easy with its 291 cubic-inch V-8 with a 200 horsepower rating. The 1955 DeSoto Fireflite is also a rare car with only 775 produced for 1955.
In the end DeSoto production ceased in November of 1960 and when the last DeSoto rolled of the assembly line, it took a chapter of American automotive history with it. The chance to own this magnificent Fireflite convertible is literally a chance to own a piece of American history. Its impeccable restoration and classic 1950s styling are sure to be a hit at any car show.
