1950 Willys Jeepster - $37,900 - Scottsdale, AZ - Brighton Motorsports is pleased to present this classy yet casual 1950 VJ-673 Jeepster Phaeton in Tuxedo Black with Tan convertible top.
Originally made in Toledo, Ohion, and known as perhaps the first “Crossover”, Willys developed the Jeepster to literally crossover into the passenger automobile market from their more utilitarian truck type vehicles.
To this end, Willys employed famous industrial and automotive designer/stylist Brooks Stevens to create a vehicle with boxy, yet distinctive styling.
Only offered with rear-wheel drive, traditional Jeep customers that knew of the vehicle weren’t very interested. As it turns out, the Jeepster was a hit with critics, but was largely ignored by the market due to a limited advertising budget. In the end, 19,132 VJ Jeepsters were built, and in 1950, only 653 had the optional Lightning Six.
Our example has benefitted from a professional ground-up restoration, and is equipped with the rare Lightning Six engine, with Optional Overdrive.
It has a matching numbers engine and chassis, excellent paint and interior. There’s a new Hartz cloth top with matching side curtains. The original owners manual is present, along with the correct jack & wrench.
We also have the correct optional Willys passenger compartment heater (not installed, in a box).
Outside, there’s the original spotlight, and yellow fog lights. Also an optional Continental Kit Spare Tire Cover. The Harvard Red wheels are wrapped in BF Goodrich Whitewall tires.
This Jeepster starts easily, (via the floor mounted starter button) and quickly settles down to a smooth idle. The Lightning Six provides plenty of torque to get her rolling, and the three speed manual transmission shifts correctly, while the Automatic Overdrive engages over 35mph in top gear if you momentarily let off the gas.
This isn’t really a car, nor is it a truck.
It’s a Jeepster.
Driving it around just puts a big smile on your face, and in the end you’ll understand the simple magic of it. The power won’t set the world on fire, and it doesn’t need to. It’s exactly perfect for trundling around town on a lazy afternoon where time isn’t an issue. Put the top down, throw the cooler in back with a couple blankets, and head down a nice quiet country road for a spell, wind back the clock, and smooth everything out.
It’s that nice.
Please call or email for more information, or stop by Brighton Motorsports for at test drive.
