1950 Chrysler Town & Country - $55,000 - Carson, CA - 1950 Chrysler Town & Country Newport“Chrysler’s Wonderful Woodie” went out with a major splash in 1950. The Town and Country Newport was new that year and, aside from a couple of prototypes produced in 1946, was the only wood-bodied Chrysler hardtop coupe ever produced. It featured an exclusive all-steel body with ash framing overlays, which were assembled prior to being fitted to the body. This required extensive hand-formed contouring of the compound-curved frames so that they would mate to the metal body correctly. Unlike earlier Town and Countries, the ash framing was the only wood used, with the side panel inserts painted the body color. Inside could be found more beautiful wood trim and finely detailed Streamline Moderne touches, as well as an unusual but stunning marbled steering wheel.
Offered only with the 135-horsepower Spitfire straight eight and Fluid-Drive manual transmission shifted on the column, the Town and Country Newport retailed for $4,028, making it Chrysler’s most expensive car outside of the big Crown Imperial sedans. Only 698 were built; after which, the luxury Town and Country, once the favorite of movie stars and country club founders, became a thing of history.
Presented here is a very nice and mostly original 1950 Chrysler Town & County Newport with 75,000 documented original miles. Shown in its original Juniper Green with Tampa Beige top, this luxurious Woodie shows remarkably well and runs even better. Specific items that have been redone or are new on this Chrysler include: New Battery, New upper and lower radiator hoses, new heater hose, new antifreeze, new oil pan gasket, valve side cover gaskets, rear motor mounts, pinion seal in the rear end, 4 shock absorbers, ignition wires, points, condenser, rotor, distributor cap, spark plugs and timing set. Under the Town & County there is a new muffler installed as well as its original disc brake system which included all new wheel cylinders and master cylinder, new stainless flex brake lines and steel brake lines as needed. The Town & Country is also equipped with 15 inch steel wheels wrapped in BF Goodrich Silvertown wide white wall radial tires and its original polished Chrysler badged hub caps. With only 25 of these Town & Country Newport’s known in existence, this Chrysler is a collector grade classic that has withstood the test of time and has only become more and more collectable as they are continuously getting harder to find and more desirable!
